Just wanted to let you guys know (those on the fence especially), that my new MSI 5850 card i purchased the other day is smooooooooth as butter. I have it in a system with a i7 920 and 12 gigs or ram running windows 7.

1920x1200 on a 24" never looked so good!
DAO, ME2, DoW2, WoW, STO all look awesome maxed out!

I'm going to assume that SC2 will run like butter on max settings as well.
I was contemplating purchasing a 5870, but i'm glad that i chose the 5850 instead. Saved myself a bit of coin, hopefully i won't regret it!

So far, i don't.

/PSA

That's good to hear. I'm torn between getting myself a new 5850 or going 5870. I love me some overkill, but I also don't want to spend the extra 100 bucks of so on a 5870 if I don't absolutely have to.

well i haven't tried running Crysis or any other super high demanding FPS's though. I figure, what's the point of benching Crysis anyways when i've finished it a while back on an old 9800gx2.

only things i'm really looking forward to trying are SC2, Diablo3, AvP and Supreme Commander 2 in the near future.

In addition to the smoother graphics over my 3870's in CF, I'm really enjoying the full 1080p support combined with full native support of the HD Audio options (DTS-HD, TrueHD, etc.). These are great cards.

I hear lots of complaints about msi but I've owned plenty of their products and would happily buy them again. In fact, my gtx 260 core 216 is that msi card that newegg carried forever with the OC to 655 core and I've been extremely happy with it.

I love how a few early-adopters have problems and all of a sudden everybody assumes that every single card/mobo/ram stick/hd/etc from said manufacturer or company has the aforementioned problem.

good luck with a 5970, my brother's sister's cousin's uncle's son had one that only got 12 fps in crysis!!!

At IMP: Not everybody has this problem.

Bryan. A few? And Early adopters? Didn't the 5xxx series launch in Sept '09?

I did a google for this issue. Here are a few of the forums that have threads on this.

This problem is/was WIDESPREAD across the net. But honestly, I don't know if AMD has solved this with a newer driver or not.

I'm actually shopping for a 5870 for myself to get a lot of benches together. Probably go XFX.

I love mine as well. I'd love it even more if I could find another for MSRP. Hopefully Fermi will be the $299 reported and push these prices back down to where they belong.

I'm loving ALL my ATI cards. Any minor issues I had were resolved with driver updates. (love the monthly driver updates). Keep it up AMD and you'll have my business for good...

Is the ATI 5870 the top model ? Im assuming the 5850 cost you about 200 bones ?

Where the 5870 would cost almost 400 bones.

We need more benchmarks to see how far behind the 5850 is from the 5870. Is it a big difference and worth 100 or 150 bucks more.

Did you try a Crysis engine game with your new MSI 5850.. Once you get 60fps and it never drops on all max settings 16x AF 0xAA @ 1920x1200@85hz vsync on then I will think about getting a new card. Maybe a Fermi 1 year after its released,, soo I get a good price and not 700 bones. Like 350 bones I would pay for the fermi not more. thx

I came across some extra money recently so I spoiled myself with a Sapphire 5870 Vapor-X. Still sitting sealed in the box so hopefully I will have time this weekend to get Windows 7 and the card installed!

I don't think there's a card in existence that can do that, but I'm not 100% positive. Anyway, I ordered an Asus 5850, should be here next Wednesday. I should have paid for faster shipping but oh well.

Which is exactly why I wished him "good luck" so he doesn't have to deal with it. Not EVERYTHING is sarcastic.

Edit: Ok, for 'once' that wasn't sarcastic. I just had another 2D crash before writing that, and after I thought it was fixed. For the record, I never had a single grey-screen yet, only idle/desktop. It does appear to be a fairly highly reported problem, and ATI's driver-record doesn't help its case.
