THE FRENCH SOLUTION
Following Colin Powell?s presentation yesterday the French had their say. Here?s a portion of the statement from the French spokesman. Read it carefully ? really noodle it out. Try to see what he is really saying:

"Given the choice between military intervention and an inspections regime which is inadequate because of a failure to operate on Iraq's part, we must choose the decisive reinforcement of the means of inspection. This is today what France is proposing."

The French are saying that the inspections are inadequate ? they?re not working. Furthermore, the inspections are not working because Iraq is not cooperating. So ? the solution is ? more inspections? Leave it to the French to suggest creating a problem caused by a non-working part by introducing more non-working parts.

Come on, folks. How ridiculous is this. The inspection process has clearly shown that Hussein has failed to disarm and, in fact, has absolutely no intention of disarming. The solution is not more inspections.

Compare this to a medical procedure. There is an inspection (diagnosis) phase, and then there?s the corrective (treatment) phase. Once the doctor has made the diagnosis it?s time for treatment. The diagnosis has been made ? so further medical tests are a waste of time. The disease must be treated before it becomes untreatable.

Here?s an idea for you proctologists out there. If you happen to be a proctologist in the New York Area, and if a member of the French delegation to the United Nations comes to you for treatment today ? here?s your new regimen. Position your French payment on the table and send in the first round of inspectors. After the initial inspection process tell your patient that he has polyps that need to be removed. Then tell your new French buddy that, instead of removing the polyps, you need to send in more inspectors. Perhaps doubling the inspectors would help. Maybe even three! The goal here is to keep ramming those inspectors in until the disease has advanced to the stage where a complete buttectomy will be necessary.

Well .. it?s just a thought. Couldn?t happen to a nicer nation.

Those responses were prepared *before* Powell's presentation, and simply reiterated their government's previous position. The real responses to the substance of the Powell speech from France and other nations will come over the next few days.

Supposedly France is now talking about Feb. 14 as a deadline (maybe not *the* deadline, though). A big change in attitude, if true. I think they're setting themselves up for the Big 180.

I would think that the US would like to have countries say no to war because it might give sh!tdam a false sense of security.

France will then do the 180 and be like have some cheese, you dirty rat.

I watched the french response and it was NOT pre-prepared. I didn't see the others so I can't comment but the french response might have been pre-programmed but he winged it and wasn't reading prepared remarks.

It was probably a framework of key points with some minor post-Powell customization thrown in for good measure. If he was able to deliver it from memory good for him...most of the other statements were read (I don't remember all of them, though).

But the French FM never addressed the substance of Powell's presentation, and frankly he never really could have without first consulting with the head of state. More to the point, the salient feature of his presentation (asking for more and longer inspections), which is what people here are criticizing, was clearly *not* made up on the spot.

So the French has finally gotten Charles De Gaulle in shipshape, I'm very surprised.

PARIS-In a stunning reversal of policy, French President Jacques Chirac announced today that the French government will be supporting the 'War on Terror' after all. Five hundred soldiers from the elite Battalion du Specialistes d'Abandonnement (Surrender Specialists) of France's vaunted Armees de la Terre are preparing for movement to Iraq, where they will advise the Iraqi Republican Guards on the protocol of their upcoming surrender to American Armed Forces. "It is important to be overbearingly haughty and insufferable when surrendering," said Colonel Philippe Marie-Jeane Yves-Montand Gauloise du Petite Pommes, commanding officer of the elite Surrender Specialists, who has personally surrendered in countless battles dating back to Dien Bien Phu in 1954. "We French are world masters at surrendering, n'est c'est pas? Not like you arrogant Americans, who never surrender. Ha! I spit on your American victories!" President Chirac also announced that his government will be sending 3,000 advisors from the elite Force du Collaborateurs Francaise to assist the Iraqis in avidly collaborating with the Americans, while pretending to be part of a non-existent resistance movement.

They actually already conducted combat flight operations in support of OEF over Afghanistan. Their support was termed a "success". The de Gaulle is operational, but I believe that it's still using a smaller propeller than originally designed (after the first fell off) and cannot reach the speeds it was designed for.

I bet they have a great galley though!
