I'm f***ing stoked! FedEx just delivered my XP 3000+ Barton 400FSB, 80 Gig WD 7200 PATA, and a PlexWriter 52/24/52A. Its been so long since I've bought new hardware (2001) I had forgotten how much fun it is when you get it!!

Anyways, to give my thread relevance, what is the best way to apply thermal compound? I'm going to be using a Thermalright SP-97 and want to make sure i don't f*** up my new hardware. Also will a 300W PSU be enough to power this system? Its gonna be an NF7-S running the Barton (non-oced) with 512 PC3200, a GF3, and the above WD HD and Plexwriter.

put a tiny bit of thermal compound on a clean razor blade or a clean credit card and apply a very thin layer evenly over the cpu core. Apply a small gob on the bottom of the heatsink, spread it out with a piece of plastic and then clean off with lint free cloth. If the psu is of a quality make (Antec, Fortron, Enermax etc.), it should run your current setup just fine so long as you don't add too many hd's. If it's a no name brand, I wouldn't count on it (or at the very least, I wouldn't trust it).

Yeah its an Antec. I think the fan may need to be replaced though, its been getting progressivly louder the last year (still a low hum though).

The FedEx "chick" that visited my house the other day was rather manly and quite beefy.

I have since then changed beer brands, but it's a lot harder to get my Nick changed,I chose it back in 1999 when i joined.

Bud isn't that bad here in Canada since Labatt's makes it, i hear USA Bud is pretty much crap.

Best way to apply thermal compound:

1. Spread paste evenly on HS surface with a flat edged object (a razorblade or old credit card). Then rub it in with lint-free cloth. I prefer a used anti-static dryer sheet.

2. Put a rice-sized dab of paste on the CPU die and use the flat edge to spread it evenly.

3. Plop the HSF on the chip and clip it in.

Note: If you're replacing the processor, just clean the old paste of the HSF with 90% isoprobyl alcohol.

It is utter swill, and not very popular here outside of the NASCAR circle *pun intended* I didn't know it was made under license there by a good beer company though, good info. I like Kirin, Newcastle Brown aka nukie brown, or when hot&thirsty and looking for a cool buzz, Corona, since it's as easy as water to drink in those conditions.

keep in mind that if you are planning on getting any of the new video cards most of them require at least a 350PSU. If you are going to upgrade, I would suggest going for an Antec 480 or similar PSU.

Its been so long since I upgraded, that by the time I upgrade again, every single standard will have changed!!

AGP? Nope, PCI Express!

DDR? Nope, DDR2!!

ATX?? HA! BTX is the FUTURE!

Throw in Serial ATA, Azalia audio, and more sockets than I care to memorize, not to mention 64 bit....sheesh!! I'll need to build a new PC from the ground up!! Even the power supplies have new connectors!
