Love Nexus 7, not so sure about the SGS3

I've decided we're upgrading our BB's throughout the company, and I've given people a choice of iPhone 5, SGS3 (if the global update ever comes), and a couple of global Droids. Of course everyone so far has stated they want the iPhone, with a handful actually willing to wait and see when the iPhone 5 arrives.

So I'm playing around with an eval SGS3 VZW sent over, and it just seems too awkward to use compared to the Nexus 7. I never thought I'd ever consider an iPhone over an SGS3, but now that I have one...

  1. Having to push the Home button is annoying as it's so small and needs a hard/deep push.
  2. Having to hold it down for the task manager is annoying (Nexus 7 has a soft button for that), especially due to gripe above.
  3. Not as smooth as Nexus 7 (hardware or ICS limitation?).
  4. I'm not liking ICS after using JB for a month or so now. No search in email without having to push the menu button, and many other things that are a pain vs JB.
I've discovered all of this in 1 or 2 hours of use.

After hearing that the global update was coming, back in June, and it's still not out, I don't know if I'd ever believe VZW if they've claimed JB will be coming to the phone. I can't even get the phone regardless if they don't get this global update out toot sweet, but I'm not even sure I'd want it with ICS anyway.

I guess we'll be getting some iPhone 5's in next Friday, and it's annoying me that if I pass on the SGS3 I won't have all the apps I purchase on the Nexus available to me.

Anyone else feel the SGS3 is in major need of JB?

stock JB > stock ICS >>>>>>>>>>>>> touchwiz

OK, but how easy is it to load JB (CM10?) on an SGS3 with it locked by VZW? I don't think I'd try on these eval phones anyway, so it doesn't look like I'll get to see JB on the SGS3 before having to make a decision.

Yes SGS3 needs JB badly. Yeah I definitely don't like the design of the SGS3. I don't think I'm alone in that. Most will agree the SGS1 and 2 were sexy phones, but the SGS3 lost some of that appeal. While it may still be "good enough" it's nowhere as nice as the SGS2 and other phones like the HTC One X in terms of form.

I can see your hesitation, but if you're willing to load a custom rom, the SGS3 will absolutely fly. I suppose you just have to put up with the physical design, but that's all psychological..

Touchwiz vs Stock Android. This is what you experienced and you seem to prefer stock Android.

ICS vs JB, it's virtually the same except little smoother and Google Now. There are other small minor changes but mostly under the hood.

I actually prefer JB on Galaxy Nexus more than on Nexus 7. It feels more natural and better on a phone, imo. I think that's partially the reason Google went with phone based screen orientation on Nexus 7 rather than tablet.

I see. So any way to get stock ICS or JB onto a VZW SGS3 without the potential of bricking it? I have to send these back in a month.

There is an app called ez-unlock that unlocks the bootloader with 1 click. There is also a single download with a 1 click root. Just run the batch file. Then download rom manager from the google play store and you can load the clockwork recovery with 1 click.

You can install all roms from the rom manager too and backup your current rom. No need to restart the phone and manually boot to recovery. So simple.

I'm currently running Jellybean 4.1.1 with Google Wallet working and the Galaxy Note 2 Camera and Gallery app custom loaded on my Verizon GS3.

Go here for root/unlock/recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709

Install this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1858298

Make your S3 look like the N7:

Profit.

That ROM looks pretty sweet. I want a GS3 now just so I can play around with that to be honest. :p

Yep, love this ROM. I'm not even on a recent version, early one has been working so well. Battery life is great, and everything is super smooth.

No one touched on #3 yet....

In JB they specifically spent a lot of time trying to make the OS "feel" faster and smoother, even in some cases where it is actually slower it still seems like its faster. So when the GS3 gets JB it should behave similarly.

Indeed it does. No point in waiting on Verizon to get around to providing their bloated OTA. JB is a huge improvement over stock and custom ICS ROMs I tried on the S3.

Here's what I would offer them: an iPhone or a Windows Phone 8 device. Main reasoning, the e-mail clients don't suck on either of them compared to Android (because there's only one on the device), they both support Microsoft Office documents, calendar support is rock solid, phones can by encrypted, fully Exchange ActiveSync compliant, 100% can be managed with IT tools, and there's almost no way for the phone to be fiddled with, rooted, or hacked "accidentally". And the best thing is that both operating systems are designed for performance from the first place (take a look at any Windows Phone and none of them feel slow).

A great consumer phone does not make phone a great business phone, which is why BlackBerry survived so long these days in the first place.

And personally, I'm biased towards the Nokia Lumia 920 since that is one freaking awesome looking phone. :)

Download holo launcher HD in the market and set gku icons to jellybean and change animations to.5x it will run like your nexus 7 if not faster.

My only problem with the sgs3 is the freaking home button. I hate that thing. Why the hw home button? It makes it harder to use one handed.

Its because it has more functions now.a quick tap will take you home while holding it will get you apps running and a quick double tap will get you s voice

To which I disable S everything as it just slowed down going to home screen. They could have made double-tap on a capacitive button just as well.
