Love lemonade, but hate the heartburn. Alternatives?

I'm thinking a different fruit concentrate that could be added to water and sugar to make a delicious summer beverage.

Any recommendations for a non-sweetened fruit concentrate?

If you have constant issues with heartburn, you might have your doctor check you for acid reflux. It's no joke; I had early warning signs of ulceration in high school because of acid reflux. Prilosec or Pepcid are a simple remedy to be able to enjoy the refreshing deliciousness of lemonade.

Yeah, I had to be put on time release omeprazole because of that.

I was having problems with meats and dense foods getting stuck in my chest as well. Sometimes it would even come back up :( The pills got me back to about 90% but I still have to go get an upper GI to see what's going on in there.

I wouldn't call the heartburn constant. It only pops up when I drink more than one glass in a day. Sometimes I would like a second glass...

I would say that's often enough to get it checked out just to be sure. And the OTC heartburn stuff can be a huge help with that as well.

Beyond that, I'm a big fan of frozen beverages in the summer. Smoothies are good, and you can use some yogurt to offset any acidity from the fruit. A large Slurpee is also damned refreshing on a hot day, though they can also be way too syrupy. But frozen lemonade and limeade is really where it's at, outside of a margarita or mojito (which are also pretty acidic). Citrus is just tops on a hot day.

I've been enjoying blended watermelon drinks this summer. I hesitate to call them smoothies because they are thin, and therefore nice and refreshing.

Basically you just blend chilled watermelon, some other fruit of your choice (berries are recommended as they go with the flavor; 5:1 ratio of watermelon to other fruit), a little bit of honey, and a few ice cubes for good measure. Adding water isn't necessary. The result is a very refreshing, delicious drink.

The key to smoothies, IMO, is to not add fruit juice. All you need is the fruit itself, and water/honey to get your texture/flavor right.

Not fruit, but sun brew some tea, chill, and add lemon slices.

As for the heartburn, go speak to your local pharmacist about possible OTC treatment options.

omeprazole in the morning for a few days before you want to drink lemonade and continue to take omeprazole (or similar) afterwards. But, check with your doctor first re: acid reflux, ulcers, etc.!!

If it happens every time you drink more than one glass a day of lemonade, it is "constant" and, not normal. Get thee to a healer.

Eat more pickles or even better drink the pickle juice from a jar of claussen pickles.

Other pickle brands might work, but are unconfirmed, and in any case taste like crap compared to claussen.

I had the strangest cocktail a few weeks back; the pickelback. It's a shot of Jameson with a shot of pickle juice as a chaser. Apparently it's a Boston thing, combining their Irish heritage of whiskey with their American heritage of "whatever the fuck is left in the fridge to chase this whiskey." And it is goddamn delicious. I highly recommend it. Bonus points for ordering it at a bar since it tends to get bartenders to give you a long, hard "you're fucking with me" stare (which makes it similar to a Prairie Fire, but infinitely more drinkable).

I might try that. The pickle juice really works as a cure for heartburn for me, and alcohol tends to cause the heartburn. Sounds like the perfect combo to enjoy some whiskey without the pain.
