Um...earplugs?

I was not firing it Mike, a fellow idiot with a IQ of 10 decided it would be funny to discharge a 12 gauge next to my head for laughs.

I've been to a Manowar concert. For a while (and may still) they held the Guinness book of world records title of "Loudest Band...EVAR!"

Here's a quote from their website...

"The band continued to play to packed halls. In Hanover, Germany they established a new standard in ear splitting power by breaking their Guinness record for loudest band in the world. Two sound specialists officiated, measuring and documenting with painstaking care as Manowar shook the city, playing live at a staggering 129.5 decibels through 10 tons of amplifiers and speakers measuring 40 feet in length and 21 feet in height. This astounding event was reported worldwide. Another highlight of the "Secrets Of Steel" tour was the band's first performance in Russia, where they had been voted the live act music fans would most like to see, beating out the Beatles and Michael Jackson."

Their concert was loud. Very loud. My head was numb for 3 days.

the smashing pumpkins have played at least 119 decibels, according to the greatest hits DVD where there's a live song where the subtitle says "current room volume: 119 decibels. adjust volume to maximum to simulate effect." or something like that. not exactly manowar, but still pretty loud.

the loudest things i've ever heard was standing in front of my own guitar rig cranked to the 10, which was 2 marshall stacks in a small room. 2 100 watt tube amps (actual output more like 140 watts each), 8 12" speakers. you can about triple the wattage to approximate "solid state" volume, so figure it's like running an 840 watt stereo amp at full blast. even with earplugs, it was pretty violent sounding.

For me it was the launch of the Cassini spacecraft.

And locals there were quick to point out that it didn't even come CLOSE to comparing to the volume of a shuttle launch. I would truly like to experience that someday.

Anyone been around a flashbang when it goes off? I've heard those produce 180db at the impact.
