Loud screech turning car on in the morning

My girlfriend's 92 corolla is screaming with pain it seems when we turn it on in the morning on cold days. I believe this is the power steering, but it seems to be getting worse. Does this warn of impending doom?

I should have added that it stops after 5 or 10 seconds, and seems to start again when we start to turn the wheels.

What is it that causes the belts to start squeeling like that and then stop all of a sudden? Just them starting to spin?
