Loud modem question

I have a freind who keeps complaining that his modem was too loud, so I volunteered to help, but i can't get this thing to shut-up.
OS is winXP pro and the modem is a Conexant (Rockwell Software) 56K.

It dials up fine and connects fine with the usual beeps and WEEEE AAAHHHs. but then it has a constant hiss and such when connected. I've never used a Conexant modem before but i just figured the old lowering the sound level in modem properties would do the trick - it didn't. So I then tried the atm0 in the advanced properties trick and it still didn't fix it:|

Can anyone help? I don't use modems (dial-up) anymore and I sure as heck don't use winXP 😉 but it doesn't seem like the controls are any different than what I used to use but I can't get this thing to shut-up.

TIA 😀

I would just yank the onboard speaker and test the speaker for resistance. then replace the speaker with a resister.

OTOH, Office Max has a 56k modem for $10 with a $10 rebate....

Thanks Evadman but the "noise" is coming directly from the modem. From my searching online i've read that many many others seem to be experiencing the same thing as my freind.

Oh and I've suggested a new modem but he says "this one works so why buy a new one"

Does it have a headphone plug (female - just like the one the soundcard has) in the back?

If so - find an unised pair of headphones, and clip the plug(male) off and insert it in the modem headphone jack. If all goes well, it will think there is a headphone and send the sound to the head phone. Of course it is just a plug - so you hear nothing.

Hope this helps you - i used this to shut up the modem when dialling.

I have not seen one in a couple of years, but some modems use to come with a mini speaker on them. I remember reading somewhere that putting tape over the mini speaker would quiet it down substantially. I not sure if that helps with what you have there though.

I had the same problem before. This friend of mine's modem was really loud when it connected, and after it connected it stayed on! I tried all the software settings I could find, but nothing would shut it up. So, I took out the modem, and a pair of pliers, and ripped off the little onboard speaker on the modem. Fixed it real good, and it still works fine to this day 😀
