loud hard drive click

my hard drive makes a loud clip-clop sound every minute or so, and after a while will sometimes lock up and clip-clop constantly. what do you guys think is the problem. it is a 1 year old 30GB western digital hard drive. The longer the computer is on, the more frequently it makes the noise.

So i am using my laptop now...
my computer locked up after it being on for only 5-8 min. It was doing the clip-clop-clip-clop thing constantly. The computer has been off since yesterday afternoon. Did I do this to the drive, or should i contact Western Digital??😕

it's called the click of death and it means there is physical damage to your harddrive. It is defective and you should RMA it. Go to western digitals' web site and download the diagnostic tools. It will give you an error code you can call tech support with and they will replace it for you assuming it's under warranty and not a grey market unit.

Yea I had that happen to me to, within a week after I had bought that WD 30Gig. Run the diag and call 'em up with the info. They'll ship you a new(refurbed) one.

Even if the diagnostics don't report anything wrong.....still request an RMA. A hard drive should not be making noises like that.

Ya, I'm also a victum of Western Digital's infamous Click of Death.

I haven't buy another WD drive for 5 years, and was about to buy that 100g with 8mb cache.

Thanks to your response, I will buy a Maxtor Instead. I thought WD would have fixed the problem by now,.......................

I guess NOT

Maxtor Rule, however, Samsung drive is still my most reliable drive thus far

The click of death. I thought it was the famous 75Gxp that did it?? I've never heard of any WD SE version died on anyone yet though. Don't think there will be any. 🙂

I have owned several different manufacturers hard drives that have introduced the click of death into my world. It sucketh! Brands include: Western Digital, Maxtor, Samsung, IBM and uh well there was another in a proprietary system..not sure the make. I like Maxtor and IBM drives. So far for me, the fewest problems from these two and best support.

Crucifier

Samsung is an asian drive lol It is much faster then my maxtor by at least 50 percent i am truly amazed.
that's comparing 60gig 5400 to 60gig 5400 and not 30gig to 60gig as it wouldnt be fair.
