hey,

anyone got or know of a step-by-step solution to replace this chipset fan w/something quiet? i'm going nuts listening to this thing buzz and screatch for hours on end.

thanks,
k

yeah, i briefly put my finger over the fan and stopped it. very quiet at that point. i let it go and got the annoying "grrrrrrrr......." sound again.

Yikes.

You know how Zalman makes the quietest heatsinks around? I got a 7700 Alcu which made a loud motor noise. I have no idea why - no wires were in it's path...etc.
I took out the heatsink and put it back on, and it worked quietly after that. It could be a similar problem to you.

Try giving the fan a few spins on your own, maybe in the opposite direction (if you can), because I'm SURE that the EPox heatsink on their nForce4 board is quiet - read up on threads.

Definitely the northbridge HS/fan on the EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra is quiet. So quiet it cannot be heard over any of my low-speed 120mm case fans. That said, I hate the idea of active chipset cooling, so I went ahead and used a Zalman Northbridge heatsink (it is a nice blue color, pretty tall, and gets in the way of nothing). It hooks on just like the normal HS/fan, just no noise! I used Arctic Alumina thermal epoxy. A bit of a risk since what if I discovered that the Zalman was not enough and now I have it permanently attached? Not to worry, my Northbridge is about 4 degrees C cooler and it is passively cooled now, and I don't ever have to worry about it coming off! (I now pat myself on the back...)

OK....I just can't take it any longer. This thing is loud as hell and I've tried your suggestions w/o any luck. Are there any step-by-step directions (with pics hopefully) on how to take this stupid fan off and put on another?

Thanks,
K

I'll get a Zalmon. Sounds like the thing to do. Question. I see two passive chipset coolers on their site. Is one better than the other? Suggestions?

Thanks,
K

I have a 9nda3+ and I just leave mine unplugged, no problems for 3+ months, the heatsink doesn't hardly eve get warm to the touch

That's a thought. I hadn't considered that. I was just under the impression that it would get hot as hell and the board would crap out and become ruined. Sounds like that isn't the case. Do you have any extra cooling that may make up for unplugging the chipset fan?

K

just the intake fans in the front of my case and a zalman 7000alcu nearby on the cpu, still it doesn't even get hot at all, I've heard reports that its really stuck on their too, so I'll just leave it.

plus the zalman passive NB coolers are tall and block pci cards, the heatsink on there now is nice and low

So far so good. I unplugged the fan and have been on this computer for several hours. Problem seems to be solved, and...it didn't cost any money. That's always nice.
