Piniella waves goodbye to half-century in baseball

CHICAGO (AP)—After all the wins, all the losses and all those arguments, Lou Piniella clearly felt it was time to leave.

Saying the final goodbye after a half-century in baseball, that was the hard part.

“I cried a little bit after the game. You get emotional. I’m sorry, I’m not trying to be,” the Chicago Cubs manager said Sunday, his eyes tearing up again and his voice cracking.

“This will be the last time I put on my uniform,” he said.

The 66-year-old Piniella announced before the Cubs-Atlanta game that he was retiring immediately after it was over and planning to spend more time with his ailing mother.

“My mom needs me home and that’s where I’m going,” Piniella said.

I'll always remember Sweet Lou as a Yankee outfielder. Mr. Clutch.

when did Lou start managing? If he's been in the game for 50 years and his mother's still alive, it must've been pretty young... good luck whever you go, Lou!

EDIT: doh, he was obviously a player first...looks like 20 years as a player and 24 as some kind of manager.

I'll always remember his on the field rants.

At least he's going out on his own terms, not being forced out in the lows of a career.

Oh, yeah. Lou could really let it fly when he got pissed.

Right. I'm sure he'd be leaving if the Scrubs were leading their division. They're gonna gut that team at the end of the year, and they've already started with Lily and Lee, he woulda been handed his pink slip the day after the regular season was over.

Hope he remains on good terms with his former teams; they may want to invite him back sometime to throw out the ceremonial first base.

they pretty much love Lou everywhere. When he coached for the Mariners he was welcomed by the Yankees fans and they hate everybody universally.
