Just started my new job and they use Lotus. Gonna take a while to get used to this thing. Any tips or tricks you wish to share with me?

Quit. Now.

Notes sucks at email. Companies like notes because it can do databases and such, but for straight email it SUCKS. The extra functions are alright and sometimes convenient, but mostly people just ignore them.

The folder system for notes is pretty bad. Most people end up just using one giant inbox and searching for stuff. If you have incoming mail auto sorted into folders there is no indication where you have new mail, only that you have new mail SOMEWHERE. So you go to your big All documents list and read it there rather than open a dozen folders and look for it.

BE VERY CAREFUL DELETING THINGS. mail in folders is merely a view, but deleting it will delete all instances. Being used to a 'normal' e-mail client you will probably make that mistake a couple times. I did.

In my experience, back office IT types love it for some reason, but users almost universally hate it.

And the database stuff is a bunch of crap as well. I had to request something from our library a few weeks ago. On the library webpage there was - I'm not sh|tting you - a page and a half of instructions for how to get t the lotus notes page/form/database/whatever you call it to actually submit the request.

Of course I'm additionally annoyed that it's a proprietary mail system with no Linux client, so I have to run citrix just to get my mail.

wtf? I can't click on a message to delete it or even empty the trash via right-click??

Or use shift-click to select multiple messages??

Heh - I just had to deal with this exact same thing. A process that reports errors by email went nuts on me and dumped 1200 messages in my inbox :p

Hold down the shift key, click on the first message to delete with the left mouse key, then drag the mouse over all of the messages to be deleted (or click the individual messages). This will put a check mark to the left of the messages. Now press the delete key on your keyboard. This will turn the check mark into a little trash can. Now hit refresh to actually delete the messages.

State of the art, eh?

So intuitive, too. Notes is a peice of sh!t. I'm forced to use it, too.

Yes!!! MS makes a connector that let's Outlook connect to your domino server. It's a free download.

If for some reason you can't get it to work or aren't allowed, kill yourself now.

Also - although F9 (send/recieve) works in both Outlook and Notes, you can also use the traditional and more commonly known F5 (refresh) while looking at your inbox. Try the F5 in Notes. *snicker*

I agree that notes suck but most of what you said here isn't true, at least not with version 6. If you have new mail in one of your folder that folder will be highlighted. Also, mail is physically present in the folder so of course deleting it will get rid of the whole mail.

Now the searching functionality, slow UI and confusing options is what sucks about Notes. The reason most companies use it, as you mentioned is because it allows you to create custom databases. SO you can create cool things like PR, accounting and document databases.

Could be true, I learned notes on R4, and it was true then. Since then I never trusted deleting anything from folders.

Up until R6, at least the way they had mine configured you couldn't copy and paste a file from windows explorer, you had to 'attach' from inside notes. Now copy and paste works... sometimes.

There is the whole "big brother" aspect in that many functions that should be user specified can be globally forced from the Domino server. Which means that while at your work Notes may let you make an internet style reply, I can't.

You can use Notes Connector to read your Notes email in Outlook assuming you have recent versions of both on your machine and can get approval to do so.

That's what I did until we merged with another company and their IT department pushed for Exchange/Outlook. Now we only use Notes for the DBs.

Had to bring this back since I have a new gripe.

I was invited to a meeting which I accepted and it went to my "calendar". so I thought it was safe to delete the invitation which was in my Inbox. Wrong! it deleted the calendar entry too!

Ugh, you poor soul. You don't happen to work at Kaiser do you? We use Notes here (Kaiser), and it sucks. At this location we are just now starting to migrate from 5.0.8 to 6.5.2. What a frigging nightmare that is going to be.

Ahhh. Probably same deal though. Big companies move at the speed of tar on major IT changes.
