Thoughts on the Lotus Evora? It's not particularly light and it's not particularly fast, but it looks awesome, it's acceptably utilitarian, and unlike most wacky British cars the engine is recognizable by your average mechanic.

Hell no. Rather'd get something else. If I made 200k/yr I'd save up and get an M3, or buy a classic Mustang.

For $80-90k, the Camry engine kills it...

80-90k is well into (and beyond) GTR, Porsche 911, Vette Z06, Viper, or used Ferrari/Lamborghini territory...why would you buy something that's not even fast and not particularly a standout?

Negative. I think it looks a little unwieldy, it has British reliability, and it's Camry-powered. I guess I don't get it.

No thank you at all.

Miata, s2k....shit even a Vette or so would be more fun for that price.

Hell, I'd get a used Aston Martin Vantage...and slap on a super or turbo-charger. :D

Lotus is not about speed its about handling, And Jeremy Clarkson really likes the car which leads me to believe its quite good. Not that all he says is right but he drives super cars for a living so his word has some say.

As an ATOT poster, I do of course make over $200k a year. I will not be purchasing this vehicle.

not just him, but everyone who has driven it has been enthralled with the performance, the subtlety, etc...

This is a stupid car - Lotus has made its niche in ultra light weight track day cars.

Instead of the 2+2 Evora they should be working on a replacement for the Esprit.

I'd never buy a car that cost half my yearly gross. In any case if I was spending that much money I'd buy something a bit bigger.

They are--it's going to be a V10-engined car. I know a rally racer who owned a Lotus twin turbo V8 Espirit. :Q

Yeah but it's not super hot or anything, it's not as good as the Honda B18C it was meant to compete with.

But what that does mean is it's pretty much bullet proof, and that's a positive for Lotus.

The Exige and 2ZZ-GE engine Elise. have the Celica GTS, Corollla XRS,Matrix XRS as well as a Pontiac Vibe ( which ever was the top of the line model) all had the same engine. IT failed some emissions test in Europe so they stopped making it for toyota. Now its Lotus only. And the engine works well in the Exige/elise. Light and powerful and reliable.

That's probably the biggest appeal of Lotus in general. You can have a wacky British sports car with a pedestrian Japanese engine.

Imagine if the Triumph Stag had used a Toyota engine. And wasn't built by Communists.

Despite the whole "Toyota=Appliance" thing everyone has, Toyota is lets face it, massive R&D and they have never been criticized for making a bad engine. The 2ZZ-FE is a sweet little motor and the 2GR-FE and 2ZR-FSE has never received any criticism I have ever heard of. The car may be bland, but people that drive the cars always talk about how broad the torque curve is, how responsive it feels and how nice the NVH is handled.

The engines are quality products. They're not exciting like V12 Ferrari and V10 Lambo, but in their class, they are solid, reliable, fun motors. There is nothing wrong with Lotus having a Toyota engine, in fact it's nice to have such a large support base and parts network. You want a daily supercar? The Evora seems able to fill that role.

The Evora's UK Price is about £45-50k, putting it up against the Porsche Caymen S (~£45-52K), rather than the 911 (£63k+). A possible problem is the GT-R which starts from £53K.

Even by supercar standards this is fantastic.

The next Evora will be interesting if Lotus use the 2GR-FSE. That would bump power by 35 bhp and torque by 20 ft.lbf, bringing the power levels more in-line with the Porsche Caymen S. Apparently it didn't fit and they are working on it.

Lotus does great for performance, but it's not really a super car, more like a super gocart.
