Hey guys. I run Windows ME now but want to cross over from the Dark Side to wonderful land of Window 2000. I hear NTFS is better than FAT32, so I'd like to reformat in NTFS... but I have tons of files already on my disk and my only other hard drive is also full... So what do you suggest I do? Am I just going to have to burn it all to CD? Can I still use the other hard disk in FAT32 if I boot from a NTFS disk? How did you guys make the transistion?

you can convert your file system to ntfs later on when you want. But it's a one way process. You can't convert ntfs back to fat32 without formatting.
To convert your fat32 to win2k go to a command prompt, then type "convert c: /fs:ntfs" you'll havve to reboot it for it to convert your system drive.

Hey, that's great. That way I won't have to find a way to transfer it off and back on. I'll just make the switch, just like going from FAT16 to 32, apparently.

Thanks a bunch! :)

NTFS is more secure than FAT or FAT32, but it doesn't work with DOS.

For home use I suggest FAT32, because NTFS don't offer any real performance boost over FAT32. Fat32 let your work with DOS to fix your drive volume when the system crashes or infected with viruses, while NTFS can only be restore with a retore disk set, ghost, or reformat.

ntfs is faster than fat32. my bench one of my drives with 2 different formats and NTFS is always faster.

Make sure you defrag before and after the convert. Running scandisk before the convert is not a bad idea either.
