This is going to be a fairly long post, so I apologize, but I definitely need help. I'm trying to help a friend fix her office's network (she's the owner of her own business, a spa type place).
She has three computers, we'll say c1, c2, and c3. c1 is in my friend's actually office, with c2 and c3 being in the reception area for the desk workers to schedule clients and whatnot. She originally asked for my help because c1 couldn't connect to the internet, a simple fix I had assumed. I was wrong.
I started off by making sure her internet was down in her office by opening IE7 and trying to go to Google. It wouldn't go. I decided to mess with some setting in control panel and once I had run out of ideas I tried again, and it again didn't work. For some reason I decided to try my portable firefox and oddly enough it connected to the internet. I figured I would just leave it alone and tell her to only use firefox. I proceeded to unload an avg and malware bytes executable from my thumbdrive to her computer because I had a feeling she had some malware, and she had no current virus protection. At the end of the installation of malware bytes it asks to launch the program and find the most current updates, so I hit yes, but it wouldn't update. I was confused as I was jsut on the internet, so I opened up firefox again and I couldn't connect. I went back to the control panel and tried changing various things, I opened command prompt and did an IP Renew, and tried a few other things, and no matter what I did, I couldn't manage to get her back online. I decided to just run the outdated malware bytes and try to work on a problem she informed me about when I got there that morning. (malware bytes did end up finding some problems, I cleared them off).
The next thing she wanted me to figure out was that c2 and c3 had internet, but only c2 could use the printer, the onther two computers could not. I didn't really have any idea how to find a solution as I have never networked a printer before the way she had it setup (printer being hooked directly to the router).
some info:
c1- win xp, can't connect to internet or printer
c2- vista, running fine
c3- vista, has internet but not printer access
internet- at&t dsl
router- netopia
things I didn't mention:
once I lost the internet connection when working on c1, I decided to plug the ethernet cable into my laptop, and after some configuring, got internet running (although very slowly) on my laptop, which is an old Toshiba running PClinuxOS 2007
control panel wasn't the only place I went, I tried changing some router options too (not that I know much about router software)
hope that is enough information for y'all. just to let everyone know, I'm not using the information here to make a ton of money, I'm just trying to do this for two reasons, helping out a friend and to learn some things.
thanks for any and all help!
