Lots of noobie questions

Go easy on me guys, but here goes...first off I built my current rig in 2007 with an Asus P5n32-E SLI plus motherboard. I run XP pro 32 bit from an OEM package. I want to start a new build with a new gamming mombo for I5 or I7 cpu. but not sure when this will happen

1. not sure how long it will be before I buy the hardware, but if I upgrade my OS now with windows 7 and buy another OEM package will that prevent me from upgrading my hardware later?

2. I want a SSD and figure I will at least buy the SSD at the same time I buy the new OS, if I upgrade from XP 32 bit to the win7 64 bit version, will all my files, software and games on my other HDD's be unreadable by the OS 64 bit running from the SSD drive?

3. Is it silly to buy an SSD and just reinstall the XP pro I have now on it until I'm ready for the full rebuild?

I didn’t fully understand what the EOM version of windows was (buy on Newegg.com) back in 07, but starting to realize that if I make a major upgrade to my system like new motherboard, CPU and memory that it may cause problems with my OS license....that’s correct right? Didn't know that back then just thought it meant a cheaper packaging with less literature. So if that’s true I shouldn’t buy another OEM version if I plan on making a major upgrade in the future…correct?

Thanks, I have other questions about which is the right gamming SLI motherboard to go with an I7 and best memory and graphics card to go with it but I will ask those questions in the appropriate locations on this site.

Thanks

1. Installing Windows 7 now will not prevent you from upgrading your hardware later. The worst that will happen is that your Windows 7 will get deactivated because it detected a hardware change. All you have to do in that instance is call the automated telephone number to get it reactivated.

2. You will have to re-install any software and games, even if they are on a separate hard drive. Files such as documents/pictures/music/video on a separate hard drive will be recognized just fine.

3. Don't install Windows XP on your SSD. There are a number of extra steps you have to do to prepare a SSD for an XP installation. It is possible, but a hassle. Just wait until you get Windows 7 to use the SSD.

Technically OEM licenses are only good for a single computer and are not transferable, but I have never had an issue with upgrading hardware using OEM Windows and I've been doing it for years. Again the worst you will encounter is a Windows deactivation which is an easy fix.

Hope this helps!

Helps a lot. Sounds like I can get an SSD now along with a new OEM copy of win7 and install it. I was thinking about a Samsung 830 256K SSD. I can reload my office 2010 and the few game I play on the new SSD and transfer my personal files over to the new instalations.
