so here is the run down on my drives

Internal
-500GB Windows XP seagate (150 gb used)
-250GB Maxtor OS X (200gb used)
-250GB WD * empty
-200GB seagate * empty
-120GB seagate * empty

External
-500GB MyBook wd (467 gb used)
-250GB Inland PATA seagate empty

Should get some usb enclosures for the starred ones or what should I do with them? RAID is out since they are different sizes, though I suppose I could do JBOD, but I don't really want all those disks running all the time. I suppose I could consolidate my 100+ case of disks of random data. It's a daunting task...

sell the unused ones, and buy new ones to make RAID sets?

what the hell you people are doing with all this data is beyond me. and why you have a TB+ free and cant figure out what to do with it is another puzzler.

I agree. If they're empty, just get rid of them for some bigger drives. Why keep so much stuff on the external drive? The empty ones should be able to get you a decent drive.

*edit*
Doh! Left out rid.

I'm a total data pack rat. I should use spring break to clean up my data. I used a file cataloger to label 100+ DVDs and there contents, but I don't think I've looked at any of them even once.

keep a few of those. Upgrade to larger drives and consolidate. I'm in a similar position myself. I have 4 drives: 160, 200, 320, 350 (or something like that).

I wanna have: 200GB for OS, 750GB data, then upgrade to another 750GB or 1TB when/if the first fills up. I also wanna implement some kind of external backup (1TB or so).

I had a bunch of IDE 120-160GB drives sitting around so I took an old A7V (8 IDE devices) and an old KR7A (8 IDE devices) and built 2 Open SuSE Linux systems. Made the mount points under s single directory and used Samba to share it on each box and now I am using them for video storage.
