overpricing? Have you ever looked at new Sun or SGI computer prices, or how about high quality x86 from big-name vendors??!

Hell a new dell proliant with dual Xeon proccessors can run you about 5000-7000 dollars when you get all finished with the options and stuff.

And that's not realy overpriced for what they are.

Deferent markets different computers, the G5 are minority computers and Apple caters to a specific audiance, not to mention that they develop there own OS and lots of applications. They also do development work on lots of the hardware used in their systems and such.

I don't think that they are nearly overpriced as much as people like to pretend they are.

(and Apple's lack of truth in advertising pales in the face of giants (liars) of the industry like Microsoft, but I doubt that stopped most x86-fanboys from giving them money (except when they can warez it, of course. But that doesn't have much to do with deceit or dishonesty, does it?))

Uh maybe because Apple is more mainstream for desktop use than Sun or SGI? Maybe because apple tries to be insanly user friendly, which isn't for everyone lots of people prefer something that isnt dumbed down too much. Apple with their marketing and such is by far the easiest to make fun of though.

we have a couple Sun servers here.

they're alright. I'm not a big fan of the way their boxes are laid out, but stability-wise, I'd put them ahead of Supermicro and Dell servers, but behind HP servers.

Sun dont make consumer PC's hence no one cares. Sun cater very well to their market i.e servers. Apple just pretty up what is otherwise a normal PC with a fancy looking case and proprietary software and sell it at a higher price and pretend it is superior. Their so called benchmark comparisons are a complete scam, no matter what their numbers say, all the macs I use feel sluggish. The PC is an open standard hence people can actually improve it rather then complain about it.

And workstations.

Most of the people on this site use Windows. What is more proprietary? Windows which is ALL CLOSED, including a bunch of APIs, or Mac OS X whose core is open (Darwin) with a closed gui (Aqua)?

and sell it at a higher price and pretend it is superior.

If you get a high end Dell, you pay out the rear.

Their so called benchmark comparisons are a complete scam, no matter what their numbers say, all the macs I use feel sluggish.

All marketing departments are lying scum.

The PC is an open standard hence people can actually improve it rather then complain about it.

DDR RAM, IDE hard drives, SCSI, open firmware... Sounds pretty open to me.

I think the proprietary parts come in at the northbridge equivilent on the Macs (maybe it's still called a north bridge...). But people want to ignore that and hold on to old theories.

people only hate the "opposite" product with a "house hold name"

not many common folk know about Sun and that sort. So they don't care to hate.

most hate out of necessity. they are gamers, so mac is out of the question to begin with. they can't afford, they instead have to self build a pc anyways...best to denigrate the other team to make yourself feel better about what you can own:p

Yeah that must be it, it cant be the 2% market share, misleading ads, and completely proprietary design.

misleading ads? apple has a monopoly on this?

as for market share, that stems from office pc's everywhere, and gamers..and well, simply price. an emachine is hard to beat. its not a matter of fundamental superiority. the ubiquity of walmart says nothing of quality.

Ummm, who cares? Or are you one of the "I wanna be cool too!" people?

misleading ads,

It's called MARKETING. Name a company that puts advertizing out there that is 100% not misleading.

and completely proprietary design.

Did you not read any of this thread? PPC is open. Open Firmware is open. DDR is open. IDE is open. SCSI is open. Firewire is pretty open. USB is open. PCI is open. AGP is open. What am I missing here?

I think they are confusing "open" with "the ability to by individual peices of propriatory hardware and propriatory software and stick them together and have them work with little to no effort except the ability to get $ to pay for it all".

I call this ability 'SHAKA', and the non-ability "YUBAU"

Their just irritated that Apple is non-shaka and completely yubau.

indeed.

if I could dual-boot a Mac OS and XP on a machine that I built myself, I'd do it.

but I'd never pay the money that apple charges for one of their machines. it's too big of an investment for something that I might end up hating.

Ok, I'll take a **** at it :)

A few basic facts/assumptions:
Most people here own x86 and run Windows on it.
Most people here have never used a Mac, or if they have, they used one back in the Quadra days or earlier, and just assume it's not changed since.
Most people here think they know everything about Macs regardless of the above.
Most people here know little to nothing about Sun, but they're aware of it, so Sun becomes "That company that makes servers" or some such.

Based on the points above, most people feel that Apple sucks since:
The boxes are slow, that Quadra is no match for my P4-EE!
The OS sucks, I used MacOS 1.x once, man that thing is nothing compared to XP.
Jobs is a nut, ok, no argument there, but at least he's funny to watch, kinda like Ballmer, only not as scary.

Hence, people here bash Mac's cause they think they know everything about them, while they in reality know next to nothing.
And they don't bash Sun, cause they know they know next to nothing about it, and it's kind of a scary territory to venture into.

Also, it's funny to see people running Windows complaining about the proprietary nature of Apple :D

PS
Why the fsck is st4b banned? I thought it was kinda stupid to ban "$hit" but "st4b"???

Genius is often mistaken for insanity.
