First of all, both these PC's are using windows XP professional edition. My newer pc isn't fully updated, but I don't think that could cause them not to be able to communicate, could it? Both of the computers are using onboard LAN. I used a 25' crossover cable to hook them up.

Ok, I got my second computer and bought a crossover cable to connect it to my other. I installed the mobo drivers for my mother board(biostar m7ncd Pro) and I plugged the cable into each computer and created a network connection on each computer. My older system(using a ECS k7s5a pro) shows the LAN is connected, but for some reason I can't do anything in the command console. Everything I type it will give me a "xxxxx" is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file error message, and I'm positive the syntax is right as I use the same commands on my other computer. I have no idea why it's doing that. Anyone got an idea as to why I get that?

Now, On my newer system with the biostar mobo I can ping 127.0.0.1, that indicates my on board LAN is functioning properly right? I can't try that on my older system though because of the above problem. I've tried about a million things now and have started from scratch at least four times. I've looked through many, many different websites and while all seemed to be a very promising solution, none have gotten my little LAN to work. No matter what I do my biostar mobo will tell me that no network cable is plugged in. Could someone point me in the right direction here?

Ok, I got this new message. I believe it is hardware related...

It says: Media State...........................Media disconnected when I type in ipconfig on my new machine with the biostar M7ncd pro board.

Could this mean either bad crossover cable or bad onboard LAN? Should I try and get ahold of two NIC cards and try that out?

No, I bought it at my local computer store. You thinking it's a bad cable? Is that what the "media state" is referring too? The cable?

Bummer, looks like I get to try this again on Monday then when I can return the cable and get a different one.

since it sure seems like it a cable, Are you sure they sold you an Crossover cable? You can tell if you compair the ends. The wires should be in different places on each end. In other words if one end is orange/white, Orange, Green ect starting with Pin 1 the other end should have the oposite colors connected to the same pins. If both ends are the same then it's not a Crossover and will not work direct like that without a Hub or switch.

easy way to tell, on one side from left to right with the clip facing down, one should start white orange, orange, and the other side should start white green, green. if their both the same ex WO, O, WO, O or WG, G, WG, G then its a strait through and won't work when directly connecting 2 computers together.
