I had a LoTRO account last year which I abandoned after a month or two (I was still raiding in WoW back then so never had the time to play this). Now that I've been MMO-less for ~4 months I took advantage of the free play last weekend. It was quite fun, I leveled my minstrel from 10 to 14 or something like that. I don't have Mines of Moria yet so I'll probably get it for $9.99 which will include a month subscription.

And then I'll have ~10 days until the end of the month to decide if I want to get the 3-month subscription plan to get the next expansion for free.

This is the first time I have heard about the Adventurer's Pack though. How much is it? Is it somewhere in the OP and I missed it?

I fired up LOTRO on the weekend and started a new character on a new server and had a lot of fun (got to level 18). I'm just wondering if I will get bored once I get to the larger areas, which is what happened the last couple of times. The new things they have added are awesome and make the game much more enjoyable, but again, not sure if it's sustainable for me. I may try to find the Moria expansion cheap somewhere, if the game can keep my interest for another dozen levels or so.

The biggest thing for is I really like to play solo while I listen to music/podcasts, but from my experiences so far, the only truly viable solo characters seem to be Hunters, which is fine for now, but is kind of limiting in the long run.

Hum.... Champions.

They are still the Godlike class on LoTRO. I quit in Feb/March due to lack of funds and went back for a week when they did a recent freebie... My Dwarven Champion was just as vicious as ever.

Strong 1v1 DPS, by far the best AoE's, can tank even without a shield, strong HP, decent healing skills....

Hunters were amusing when I played and allegedly "OP". I couldnt match a Hunter's 1v1 killing speed in Lothlorien (before it fully opened) against level 60-62 Orcs but 2v1 and above they didnt stand a chance of beating me out in damage terms. I could take 4v1 and never saw a Hunter manage to take down 3v1.

Champions are an extremely versitile class with group and solo powers. Effective in almost every scenario and absolutely essential in most end-game instances for their Clobber ability (interrupts special monster skills which can include healing 60,000+HP or summoning monsters).

I wish I could buy Mirkwood and return to my Kinship but it is not possible at this time.

looks like it's also $20, but they have a special for those under either of the lifetime subscriptions that you get the new expansion free if you buy the pack by the end of the mnonth.

Hmm, I have not played a Champion since beta because I did not enjoy the class that much. Maybe it's better now; I'll give it a shot one of these days.

Most of the classes are actually quite good solo:
- Hunters (burst DPS / traps)
- Champions (sustainable AoE DPS / heavy armor)
- RKs (burst DPS / CC)
- Lore-masters (pets / AoE DPS / crowd control / Flanked! self-heals)
- Burglars (stealth to quest objectives)
- Minstrels at higher levels (War-Speech allows them to switch between high end burst damage and healing)
- Warden (AoE DPS/Self-Heals)

The only ones which aren't that great (imo) are the Guardian and low level minstrels. While they have awesome survivability and can solo most of the same stuff, it just takes them a lot longer. Guardians can ditch the shield for a 2h weapon and overpower when killing easier mobs but they probably benefit the most from grouping with a DPS class to quest.

I don't know, my level 47 (I think he's 47) Captain has a tough time soloing which is why I stopped playing him, same with my higher level Minstrel.

I had a decent time soloing with my Burglar up to about 20 something, as long as I was very patient, but after that it became too difficult. Maybe it's just because I suck at playing, not sure.

With the self-heals the captain can solo single elites but doesn't fare as well against multiple mobs as some of the other classes.

Did you try the minstrel after they added War-Speech? It used to be the weakest solo class but now a WS-specced minstrel is the highest burst DPS (not sustainable) class in the game and can solo really well. Being able to heal yourself helps get you out of trouble too, as there is a lot more room for error.

Personally, I have both a 60 mini and a 60 lm and either can solo 3-4 pulls of normal mobs as well as elite +1 add pulls. The lore-master takes a little more finesse with the flanked! mechanic but has a higher upside with the ability to kill any mob it can mez or root.

I really enjoyed LotRO when I played it.

I'd love to still be playing it, but I just don't have time for another MMO alongside WoW

I'm a Guardian and mostly did Solo up to level 60. I found it to not be to difficult. However, sometimes it was very annoying because the Guardian kills things very slowly so it just took longer.

I still have fun with LOTRO. Mostly been playing the Mirkwood Beta right now, though I still am trying to get Rad gear for my guard (have three pieces). And then sometimes I play my Alt (level 30 captain). The Captain has actually been decent to Solo as well. You get to summon a helper. I didn't die until I was level 23 and I wasn't even doing anything special to keep from dying. But then I started to die a lot for some reason :p

No, I do not believe I have played the Minstrel since that came into the fold, but I can't really recall. Maybe I'll check it out. I'm going to try and play my Hunter some more tonight.

Any thoughts on the Warden and Rune Keeper classes? As I mentioned, I am contemplating purchasing the Moria expansion, particularly if these 2 classes add a lot to the experience.

When I was playing a number of months ago, the Warden was fun, and definitely quite powerful. You do do a LOT of button mashing though, like non-stop, so if that sounds a little annoying, you may not like them too much. Excellent solo class IMO. Rune keeper I only played to level 12-15, somewhere in that range. They're kinda weak, but unique enough to be enjoyable for that reason alone. I think they do much better with at least one other player involved, so you can focus on either nuking or healing.

The Rune Keeper plays a lot like your hunter when solo but is a little squishier and compensates for that with better kiting abilities. It's slightly more versatile but that comes at the price of being more complicated to play, so you may prefer the hunter for simplicity in a ranged DPS class.

There is a lot to like about the Warden but it's tough to recommend in your case. The gambit combat system is pretty interesting and flexible, but it's also rather complicated. The benefit is that unlike the champion you don't feel like you are engaged in a permanent "kill target before you run out of health" contest, but the price is lower overall damage.

Cool, thanks guys. I noticed the digital expansion for Moria was only $9.99, so I just went ahead and upgraded.

Now to decide whether the other upgrades, for only $19.99 are worth it. Guess I'll see how I like Moria first, since I beliee I still have until the 31st to decide.

Just to lay it all out there:

The way I see it the Adventurer's Pack is $19.99. The 2nd expansion which will come out in December is another $19.99.

People with regular subscription can get the 2nd expansion for free by keeping a multiple months subscription when the 2nd expansion is released. Basically, if you have an active monthly payment and change your billing to at least 3-months payment before October 31st, you'll get it for free.

People with lifetime subscription (who don't pay monthly subscription) can get the 2nd expansion for free by buying the Adventurer's Pack for $19.99

Can someone please tell me if I get this wrong? :)

Since I was already in my account, I just went ahead and got the Adventurer's Pack/Mirkwood deal. I'm a lifetime subscriber, so I paid $19.99 total for the whole thing and I get the 2 extra slot, shared storage, and the cloak right away.

There are 2 types of lifetime subs, the never pay again and those on the permanent (till they cancel) $10/month; although I can't personally verify the monthers can get this deal as I haven't really looked into that much.

also for those looking now to pick up moria, BB had the collector editions for $10 in store a couple months ago, could always stop by your local one to see if they have any left.

Man... I rolled a captain about 3 months ago and got him to 60 right away. I think the class solos just fine. I prefered it over my war speach decked out 60 Minstrel and definitely prefered the class over my 60 Champion. Out of my three 60's, the captain is the most fun and most capable character I have.

BTW - I soloed all my characters (very little grouping except where required until L60) and all were viable. Once I hit 60, it was group time. I still solo from time to time, I hit the elites around moria to get some mithril flakes when I need them. I certainly would not give up your captain and a HoH based captain is am extreme blessing to a group. The only negative a captain has is that it takes an extreme amount of skill to play them their potential. Anyone can play the class, but not anyone can play it to its full potential. I am still learning to play my captain more and more effectively. You always have something you can be doing.

So I bought Mines of Moria digital download for $9.99, my account says 'upgraded', but guess what... it says I have an 'expired' subscription so I still couldn't play (although everywhere I look it says MoM includes 30 days of free play) :(

Submitted a support ticket but haven't gotten any response yet after over 24 hours.
