Go to Amazon.com and search "Movies & TV" for...

Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring
Lord of the Rings The Two Towers
Lord of the Rings Return of the King

ALL Results:

"This item has been discontinued by the manufacturer."

What gives?

They're probably preparing to release it on Blu-ray.

I'm not selling my
The Lord of the Rings (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition) Trilogy though.

Blu-ray(s) won't be out until 2010 I thought.

KT

Edit: looks like 2009, but no specific date.

Well here's hoping they are just re-doing the entire transfer, which will upgrade the DVDs as well. Don't know for sure of course.

Colors are all fucked to hell. After you spend a year or two watching a lot of HD material, then start going through some older DVDs, you start to notice things.

For instance, like with BD, DVD transfers aren't all created equal. some are simply analog transfers from a magnetic source, some are incredibly good (Kill Bill 1 on DVD). pop in The Two Towers extended on a properly-calibrated HD set and you'll start clawing your eyes out it's so bad.

I know, I probably watched this DVD 10 times before ever upgrading to HD and didn't know any better.

Don't bet on it. ;)

I'm not. My guess is they will do something for 2010, then something again after or near when The Hobbit comes out, then maybe some sort of super-duper-ultra-uber-bane-of-Sauron edition with all movies and 60 days of bonus footage after that.

They'll probably screw us over, and instead, we get to see Sauruman and Gandalf battle it out nude, armed only with their staffs.

In high-definition, of course.

I'm sure there'll be "mistakenly" inserted sex videos of Peter Jackson and Phillipa Boyens in the special features. Jackson will be wearing his robe and wizard hat, naturally.

The scuttlebutt is that the theatrical versions will be out on BR in time for Christmas 2009 and the extended editions will be 2010 to coincide with the Hobbit.

Hmm, IMDB is showing The Hobbit for 2012, with this quote:

It has been announced by Guillermo del Toro that shooting for this film will not start until 2010.

Not saying it's gospel, but that's all I've got right now.
