Lot of file corruption

Running 64 bit Vista Home Premium on a Q6600 and Abit IP-35E with 2 GB of OCZ 2GB Platinum PC2-6400 memory, a 500gb WD Sata hard drive, liteon dvd burner, OCZ 700w PSU

I have been having a lot of trouble with files becoming corrupted. I have had to do a System Restore numerous times after various updates or even minor installs like the Combined Community Codec Pack or Foxit PDF reader.

Also many downloads' md5 checksums do not match those listed on the website I'm downloading them from. For instance, I have downloaded the bf2 1.41 patch from 4 different sites and still cannot get it to load. Every time I get a different md5 sum. Most files transfer ok, but it is the at extreme end of problems.

I have tried replacing the DVD Drive with a spare to see if it was due to windows files not copying correctly, it has not helped.

I have manually changed my ram timings to 5-5-5-15-42 to match suggestions I've seen on other websites, and upped the voltage to 2.1V

I have also experimented with 2.0V, but it was no help.

I have the latest drivers on everything, and have tried making a new vLited Vista install so that I can include the latest chipset drivers with my OS install, to see if it would help. I have also tried going back to 32 bit XP. None of this helps.

I have run Orthos and Memtest with different timings over the course of many nights the last 2 weeks, and never had a single error with either 4-4-4 or 5-5-5 timings. I am keeping them at 5-5-5 for now.

I have also tried running the last v13 beta bios.

I'm really stuck here, a couple of times after I play Stalker the game no longer runs, although reinstalling it sometimes helps. Only other cure has been OS reinstalls, of which I've done many recently. The corrupted downloads are extremely aggravating, and I cannot install 3 of the 'important' updates on Windows Update.

Any ideas?

1. roll back to the latest non beta bios
2. what AV software are you using
3. system restore is a bad way to fix problems, viruses and trojans tend to copy themselves there, would recommend you turn system restore off and use a better backup solution for all your data.
4. you may have a virus, malware or spyware in the system.

go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and run a full scan of the system.

I run AVG Free Antivirus. I have used that trend micro website on previous computers but I cannot get it to run right now, I get an error when I hit scan.

I've gone back to the bios that came with my board, I will try v12

what is the error message you're getting when housecall tried to scan your system, exactly?

Says 'Windows Internet Explorer' on the title bar. Message is:

"An error occured while trying to transfer data from the Internet! Do you want TrendMicro Housecall to try resending the required files?"

AVG isnt seeing anything wrong, though.

Running on v12 bios, didnt help

you're not the only person having issues with the Ip-35 series of boards lately.

I run AVG free, Spybot w/ teatimer, CCleaner, and once a month housecall.

Using IE7, on a 3Mbit cable connection. I also run CCleaner, and I just downloaded, updated, immunized and ran Spybot, didnt find anything.

I think my problem with housecall is because of my initial problem, the corrupt file downloads.

I ran an extended test with Western Digitals Data Lifeguard tools, didnt find any errors in my HD

well, there's something causing that corruption. I've had issues with IE7 not letting housecall run or slows it down. do you get a choice as to either using the activex plugin or java plugin?

what version is your CCleaner, spybot, and avg virus definition?

Latest detection update: 11/1/2007

CCleaner v2.01.507

Was able to run Housecall 6.6 (was doing 6.5 before) and it didnt find anything. 6.5 never lets me pick an ActiveX version, it never shows up

I forget the exact time but it was about half an hour. It hung up on the windows/winxsxs/manifests folder but I started it over with a custom scan and it got through

that's not long enough, it did not do a complete scan, you are probably infected with a trojan or virus that is shutting housecall down and probably not letting avg or spybot do a full and complete check.

How do I fix that? And you think its a virus even though I successfully scanned that last folder afterwards? (took 11:15 to do so)

I think I can rule out a trojan. I booted from my Western Digital cd, wrote zeros to the entire drive, did an extended hard drive test and then installed Vista 32 bit. I'm getting a BSOD on attempts to boot

Hardware issue. Can you return the system to your vendor so they can replace it with one that works?

Yes, I have tried setting timings to auto (I think it goes to 4-4-4) and manually at both 4-4-4 and 5-5-5. I'm using the latest non-beta bios, v12

I still say you've got a trojan or a backdoor in the system, you should have had an option for activex or java when you ran housecall, or at least the chance to change whatever it wanted to run as default, coupled with it not running fully is making me suspicious.
