Customer service. Expect to jump through a buttload of hoops though, and be prepared to fax in proof of purchase.

You were supposed to put the little sticker with the key on the case ! That is what microsoft asks you to do to proove the authenticity of the license, but it doubles as a safety against losing your disks..... Of course, the practice of displaying the product key on the case does nothing to protect the privacy of the key.

it is illegal to use a warez key, even if you payed for the software. You are going to have to purchase another cd key from MS if you want to be legit. Or just another whole win xp.

The computer case, not the CD case.

I would go call up Microsoft. I have had XP tell me the key I had could not be used on two different occasions. I had no trouble with MS either time. The process is a bit long, and you have to be able to handle a big giant number over the phone, but you can get new activation codes and even new CD keys this way.

One time during a phone call reactivation it was clear that the person I spoke to didn't have a clue about computers. I could have told her that the Gonculator Valve went bad and had to be replaced, which caused XP to need reactivation.

You don't have anything to lose, as far as I can see, by calling Microsoft. At worst, you will be no worse off than you are right now.

hehe, didn't come with the computer and not on the computer. :)

guess i'll call up and see what happens. not sure if telling the truth would work better or trying to use the same CD KEY for both computers would work better (same motherboard... <g>).

honestly, i payed for the software. i got it shortly after it came out. payed nearly 200 bux. if MS says i can't use it cause i don't have some numbers for it, screw them. i had no problem paying for it. i realize MS puts a lot of time and money into new OS's and charge a good amount cause they realize most ppl are only purchase it once in their life time. i gave them my support. i don't want to have to do it twice (yes, i realize xp is cheaper now) because of an honset mistake i made.

the fck key is completely warez. I bet more then 40% of all ppl even on these forums is using the same version of xp with the same fckgw cd key.

the only option i see here is to use a partition recovery tool, like Active Partition Recovery, or Bitmart Restorer 2000 Prefessional (my favorite). They are not free, but they do work, especially if you only did a quick format and not a low-level. Once you recover the partition, use the jellybean magic keyfinder to rip your key.

a corporate keygen wouldn't help him to generate the retail (perhaps oem, but he did state that he purchased xp for $200 which makes it sounds more like retail) key he needs. you are correct in stating that the devilsown key (along with a short list of others) was blacklisted when sp1 came out.
