(I originally posted this in hardware thread but probably should be here. Sorry for those that read it already)

Tring to help a friend with this homebuilt computer he picked up. When he gave it to me it booted to BIOS but couldn't load OS. I was planning on doing a re-install/repair install but I couldn't get into recovery mode without boot disks. So I tried a different hard drive that I know is good (both XP PRO by the way), but still no go.

Was getting "media test failure -check cable error" so I tried switching cables also, that didn't work either so I went back to square one but now I can't get any output from the video card (Geforce4 Ti4200-AGP). I was using a KVM switch, but tried connecting it directly, no go. Tried connecting it to the onboard video just in case the bios had reset to that, no go.

Here's where it gets stranger: I turn the CPU on and the keyboard lights flash for a second but don't stay on. Fans come on, CD powers on, but no video out, and it doesn't sound like any activity is going on, even with XP CD in.

Any clues, why no video now? Power supply problem? I dont' see how I could have "screwed" up anything by trying a different hard drive, or switching cables. The fact that the keyboard lights only stay on for a second seems strage to me, or maybe that is normal when CPU hasn't booted up yet.

I tried replacing video card, no go. I made sure video card was seated correctly, no go.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
