I built a new machine last summer with an AsusP4P800-E Mobo inside a CoolerMaster Cavalier case. Everything was working 100% for the first few months, but at some point I noticed that one of the forward USB ports had lost a part and had also lost function. It is a two port unit that is wired to a USB header on the motherboard. Shortly their after I lost function on the second forward port (both wired to the same header on the motherboard).

Coolermaster was great and sent be a replacement card for the forward USB ports (also has a Firewire port) as well as new cables for both the USB and Firewire. I replaced everything, but I am unable to get windows to recognize the USB ports hooked into that particular header on the motherboard. I tested this by swapping a second USB set (from the rear of the case that wire to a second header next to the one in question) to the problem header and got no function.

I tried all the standard windows Xp stuff like add new hardware and look at the device manager for any red flag items. Nothing is showing up at all. I don?t see any other additional configuration in the Bios (all USB functions seems to be enabled).

Is there some other trick to get windows to pick up that USB header or set of ports again? Is it likely the whole thing is fried and I am out of luck?

sounds like the header may be fried. you could rma the board to asus for a replacement, or you could get a usb pci card but that would defeat the purpost of front usb. id rma it if i were you

I think I will live without the forward USB ports. If the header is fried I dont want to deal with unbuilding machine and waiting for a new MotherBoard. Seems to me that is probably is fried.

Thanks
