Lost Psychonauts saved games (Steam)

I've been playing Psychonauts through Steam recently. About a week ago, I had a crash (bluescreen and automatic reboot). I didn't continue playing after that and I went away on vacation for a week.

Yesterday I loaded up my game again and played to the same spot where the crash originally occurred - I had forgotten about it. (Lungfishopolis; jumping across the barges in the water to the island where the boss is located).

This time, the load screen appeared briefly before I got a bluescreen and automatic reboot. I launched Steam, relaunched Psychonauts, and all of my saved games and my profile were gone!

Now, I note that Steam installed a client update, and there were other updates when I powered on my PC again. However, my other Steam games appear to work properly. Is this a Steam issue or is my PC to blame?

I have tried:
Antivir and Malwarebytes scans (clean)
Rolled back Win XP a week (profile and saves still gone)
Searched Steam KB (no relevant articles for Psychonauts)

Looking in my local folders, the saved game files are all timestamped last night (when the reboot occurred), so I assume they're the blank save files that come with the game.

I haven't checked my video card drivers in a few months, but would updating them help?

How can I recover my saved game files?

Should I run other diagnostic software? If so, what?

Here's my hardware - everything is at stock.

C2D E6600
ASUS P5NE-SLI
OCZ GameXstream 600W
2GB Corsair XMS DDR2 PC5400
EVGA Geforce 8800 GTS 320 MB
Seagate Barracuda 320 GB
Win XP Professional

Thanks in advance.

If possible, I'd gladly send you a save file from around that point, if you're interested. Just shoot me a PM if so and I'll try to get it done tonight.

Edit: Just to clarify, I don't know if it's even feasible to transfer saves, I just know I have Psychonauts, I beat it, and generally I like to save games frequently.
