I lost the jewel case for my Win2000 CD... and what I wrote down for it must be wrong cause it won't register. Anyone know if there's a way to find the product key on the CD itself? Or a number I can call to have MS help? thanks :)

sorry this is a software question....

Why is it that people like you come here under the assumption that we are a bunch of software pirates and enjoy breaking the law?! Go buy a damn copy or search the web, don't come asking us all the time!!! Moron!!! :|

if you have the retail or OEM cd, you will have numbers on teh cd itself which microsoft will ask you to read out. You got to find them and once done you will be confirmed. Even if you havent registered. THat is what I had to do to get a replacement office cd.

I doubt it's going to happen that way because there are no numbers on his CD.

Rouge, obviously you havent paid enough attention to microsoft cd's.
They have batch numbers and other stuff on the cd written in small letters. you got to find it and read it to them.

You are working under the assumption that he has a "legal" copy of it. I am doubting that he has a "legal" copy because 9 out of 10 times, someone who "lost" their CD-key and end their post with a :) are full of it. You must learn the art of distrust and criminal investigation.

But he is not asking us for the number, but just how to get it from MS.

rouge, if he has a legal copy then he will have the required numbers written on the cd and microsoft will help him with it.

else.. he can go somewhere else.

I nearly lost my win98 number, but I finally wrote it on the cd itself and yes it's a legal cd. I just wonder why the number is not printed on the cd.

To fight the problem of copywright. why won't cd's have a registration number but you have to register it before using the software and then the software company would give you a validation code to complete the install either by phone or email or web and then would lock that registration number and no one would be able to register it unless they gave the pin and registration info in order to get a new validation code. Even if by chance you were to have all the registration info and get a new code. The software company could lock the codes at 5 let's say, and anything over 5 would require verbal confirmation and a call back for a new registration code. That would certainly curbe the pirating of software.

Rogue quit being an asshole.... your responses might be justifiable if caffrey was asking for a Cd-key but thats not the case if your READ the first post!!

If you have installed your legal Win2000 on any of your other computers (assuming you may have more than one), you can find your key by right clicking on the My Computer icon & click Properties It will then come up with a page that will have you registration key on it.
At least thats where it is on Win95 & win98, I hav'nt seen Win2000 so I could be wrong.
