Somehow corrupted a .dll file or maybe the registry. Have tried re-installing win 98se over the top of the current installation, but it doesn't ovewrite the bad file. I don't want to reformat, how can I fix this?

What is the error message or problem you are having?

That information would be helpful for us to help you. 😀

When I start OE this is the message I get "Outlook Express could not be started. It may not be installed correctly. Make sure that your disk is not full and that you are not out of memory. (0x800C012E)"
Click OK then "Outlook Express could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be initialized"
I have copied MSOE.dll from my other machine and overwritten the file, but still no go. This all started when I copied the messages folders from the old computer into to OE folders on the new machine. I have done this before in order to migrate existing e-mail to a new machine with no prob.

Ran system file checker to no avail.

Tried re-installing the newest version of IE, outlook express is part of IE also, that may recover some of the Outlook express files that was corrupted.

Try the following in order:

1) Delete any file that has a .wab extension
2) Go to start, run, type regsvr32 msoe.dll

You should be able to start OE after that.

If not, you are going to have to remove the mail files you moved over to a save directory and try restarting OE after that. Then go to file, import, messages, and then point to the directory where you saved them.

Let us know.

Thanks

Sounds like you are going to have to remove IE and OE and doing a re-install. There is likely no other way - at least none that come to mind.

If you have not installed any other IE5/OE combination you can go to control panel/add-remove programs. Second tab is the Windows setup, one of the choices is outlook express. Uncheck the box, click apply, click okay. Find file msoe.dll, delete file, reboot system, go back to same tab in Add-remove programs, then re-check box, apply, okay.

If you have installed any updated IE5/OE versions, you remove them in the first add/remove dialog box. Find the file msoe.dll and delete, reboot system, do a custom reinstall IE5/OE ( this will allow you to make sure that the Outlook Express tab is checked, and any other things you want to add that doesn't get installed by default install ).
