Lost my W2K ERD - can I create one in repair console?

I can get to the repair console - trying an emergency repair without the erd is a no go.
Can I make a new erd from the repair console? Anything else that might help from the repair console?

Unfortunately, you cannot create an ERD from the repair console. What you can do is when you prompted to go to the repair console or manual repair, I would choose the other option. Have setup serach for your installation of Windows 2000, and it should be able to do a minor repair.

What is the problem that is causing you to go to the repair console?

It's got a problem reading the software hive so it bluescreens on me so I go to repair but it wants the erd, says it can't find the installation of W2K without it.
I have installed SP1 on this thing and upped it to 128 bit.
So I thought maybe I could go to the console and copy the repair stuff from the repair dir to a floppy - but it says 'access is denied' when I try.

oh, it's giving me 'access denied' when trying to do any writing to floppy from the repair console. I wonder why, it did let me delete a file on the floppy, but I can't make a directory or write any files to it.

This is the new security protection within Windows 2000. There was a reported security risk in the earlier builds that would allow you to copy a file to the floppy. Microsoft has removed this feature. But as far as you problem, I do not have a solution.

BTW, what do you mean by the "software hive"? Do you mean the registry?

Yes, it reports a registry error on the software registry and wont boot.

Oh boy, using the SET command you can get access to write to removable media from the console - but you have to enable it from the MMC first. So if you are trying to recover an unbootable system and you have not enable SET then you can't do it. This is special. I don't know why it can't locate Win 2000 when I try a repair, unless it's that I installed SP1 and 128 encryption...

Well, I used the repair console and copied the old (original) software file from the repair dir to the system32\config dir. At least now I have a working copy of Windows. I need to reinstall a lot of software cuz it's orhphaned now. Real fun day. :(
