It turns out those of us who have unlimited data can still drop to a "Verizon Max 6GB" data plan for $30/mo. when upgrading their phone. It is not a temporary thing either. I was able to do this today at Best Buy when I picked up a new Note 3 for $199 (nice deal yah?) to replace my GNex (damn you 4.2.2). Confirmed with a rep on the phone afterward that it was indeed true and it's what's set for my account. Only unlimited people qualify. Can definitely live with 6GB.

Only thing you have to watch out for is your data allowance is pro-rated to your monthly cycle. So if you only have 10 days left, then they only give you 2GB till the following month.

30 dollars for 6GBs or 30 dollars for unlimited. Seems to me like you're you paying the same amount but getting less while simultaneously tying your mouth onto Verizon's penis for another 2 years.

geez, was only trying to help those who were on the fence... I had been contemplating this forever because I thought it would only be 2GB. I'm not paying $400+ for a phone off-contract knowing I will be keeping VZW for another few years anyway. Been with them since '02.

I think the OP wanted to stay with Verizon, and seeing as how they don't cut you a deal if you BYOD, it makes sense why OP took this route.

My coworker did this as well. While definitely not a bad deal, it is still with Verizon. I'm not a fan of their antics anymore.

Hey OP, don't let the haters hate on ya. If you use less than 6GB a month and you know you're staying with Verizon, then take the best deal for you.

As an aside, they also offer a 8GB MAX plan for $50 that includes tethering you can switch to. But you're on a Android device so you don't really have to worry about that.

You could've kept unlimited data and still upgrade phone at subsidized price. Now there is no returning back. I just did it in Feb with iPhone 5S Gold for $149 plus tax. Unlimited data is unchanged.

Does that involve parking it on another line? I don't have another data line. Curious, but no big deal... to be honest I use less than 2GB a month anyway. I believe I also have 72 hours to undo this if I wanted.

you could have sold the unlimited contract to someone for a few hundred $, bought a new phone at full price, then moved to an MVNO. (mobile virtual network operator) such as Aiowireless.

http://www.aiowireless.com/shop/plans.html

Or any other MVNO that strikes your fancy and services your area.
Aiowireless uses AT&Ts network so you would just need to buy an AT&T phone. For $60 per month you get unlimited talk and text and 5GB of 4G data. $10 more for every GB extra. So $70 a month for your 6GB you are currently getting from verizon for I am assuming close to $100 or more.

twice now I have no idea WTF you're going on about.

He's saying the internet is fast enough and since you were unlimited you could basically cancel your home's internet plan and just tether your home devices to your phone.

How may this be accomplished? My contact is up in July, but I'll never renew without maintaining unlimited data. I'm almost always around wifi, but I use a lot on car trips.

Every once in a while they allow it. I did it on my wifes line last year and got her a 5S. They try and play it off as a site error but we all know it was intentional. I left my line month to month. I use my sons tiered line for my upgrades. It's up this year and I'll use it to get the iPhone 6 and then transfer it to my line.

I remember them doing it last fall, missed the news in February though. My line gets an upgrade in April so I am going to be paying attention then.

Except I work from home full time (need solid connection for 2 VPNs) and need a large internet pipe while I do other things like torrents. I also don't get fast 4G in here... tests reveal as slow as 1.5Mbps at times.

Yeah if being able to do that is time-dependent and sales on phones are too...

Good to know - but with my corp discount for VZW, we pay $89 after everything for what I mentioned plus my bro's dumb phone. I don't think switching to what you mention is worth it considering I'd also have to add another line and your $60 is pre-tax. Not to mention paying full price for a new phone. I did look into selling my unlimited and 1 line goes for only $150-ish.

Sounds like a lot of people are contract-averse. Do people really switch carriers that often? MAYBE if VZW didn't have the best coverage I would be hesitant. I was considering T-Mobile until people around my area said it was really spotty. Anyway, some good suggestions in here maybe for others.

I'm not hating on the OP for sure, if anything, hating on our crappy "choices" here, both in the cell phone sector and their sponsored politicians. :p

We have a family plan on Verizon, get a corporate discount as well. We now pay $100 for shared 500 minutes (free N/W, free calls between VZW), unlimited data on my line, and $5/250 text for me and $10/1000 text for her (which sucks, they simply discontinued the $5 plan a few years ago or I would have just kept it on her line). It's an old America's Choice II plan :p

Right now she carries a flip phone and an iPod Touch -- if she ever decides to go with a smartphone we will likely have to revisit our plan and/or carrier. Though if I ever see a chance to add something like a $15/250MB data package to her line on an old plan like ours, she is getting a smartphone whether she wants it or not.

Plus, you don't have to pay full retail for the latest flagship phones...you can resell your old phone, possibly use upgrades on alternate lines, buy used a generation behind, go mid-level, etc.

How is this even a good deal? You lost unlimited, and Note 3 for $199 on contract/upgrade deal is just an average price. You can get it cheaper if you want online.

PS yeah T-Mobile is great

Wife's sister and her husband just switched down here in Detroit Metro, because they had been annoyed by Verizon a while ago (and from my understanding, it was partially their own fault anyway) and they go to Europe a lot and Verizon phones just don't work over there :)rolleyes:).

So they let the plan with unlimited data and $5 texting go and didn't bother to resell it to someone (shoot, he works as a software engineer at a pretty big internet/software/tech firm -- guarantee someone there would have taken it) so Verizon crosses another unlimited plan off the list.

Then they go to T-Mo, and lo, mysteriously calls start dropping when talking to them now. Of course, they don't even think to consider it could be their stellar new carrier :p

I appreciate it, I don't use anywhere near 6GB/mo on my unlimited and it's an option.

30 dollars for 6GBs or 30 dollars for unlimited. Seems to me like you're you paying the same amount but getting less while simultaneously tying your mouth onto Verizon's penis for another 2 years.

Until VZW starts a 4g/LTE BYOD plan then you're paying for a phone in your monthly fee anyhow, might as well get a new device out of the deal.

Ok I'm not going to be hating on someone who have thought it out and choose to be under contract because they think it's best for them, but really?

How bad is it in your area that the best coverage you get only gets you 1.5 Mbps on 4G LTE? That is absolutely terrible!

Have you tried AT&T on 4G LTE in your area recently or was that knowledge from a decade ago? Around the Midwest AT&T never got me less than 25-30 Mbps. Average is about 40 Mbps.

That's why someone told you to cancel your home internet, because unlimited on 4G LTE is usually as fast if not much faster than your home internet and you could just use that.

Well, it could have the best coverage to the places he travels. It could also, judging from the sound of his pricing, simply not be worth switching. Much the same way it simply isn't worth me switching from AT&T at the moment.

As for Verizon's LTE speeds, they are pretty bad now. In my home area, I only get 3-5Mbps on Verizon LTE. I don't get AT&T LTE there, but HSPA+ gives me 4-6Mbps. It's consistently ahead of Verizon's LTE. Except the upload speeds, which are usually <1Mbps on AT&T and around 3-4Mbps on Verizon LTE.
