Motorheader- I'll try your suggestion, and report.
zogg- You have a good idea, I can do a fresh install with another hard disk, the only problem is that I don't know what should I replace in my original system. I can make a ghost from the new hard disk to my c:
but this is exactly the same as formating my disk. Please explain a little more.
A few days ago I did a fresh install and took the registry file from the fresh one to my system , but it didn't help. I did this in order to make sure the problem is windows related and not hardware related.

Did you try this yet.
[REGEDIT]
HKEY LOCAL MACHINE,ENUM,
(Then delete all of the keys under ENUM that have to do with ide and ayour drives and stuff)
then reboot, it should detect the drives like it is the first time starting.

In my via based machine I have under the enum key, a hive called MF, and under mf is a child0000 and a child 0001, and under those is \pci& ven and some numbers. This is what it looks like :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\MF\CHILD0000\PCI&VEN_1106&DEV_0571&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_10&BUS_00&DEV_04&FUNC_01
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\MF\CHILD0001\PCI&VEN_1106&DEV_0571&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_10&BUS_00&DEV_04&FUNC_01

Thats what it would look like in the left hand pane of regedit
On the right hand side you would see Primary ide controller or secondary or what ever device the subkey pertains to.
There are probrobly other keys under the enum key that you may have to try to get rid of.
But dont blame me if you mess something up 🙂

You know when ever I do a reinstall, my machine comes out a little better then the last time. Because I learn from past mistakes. so it may not be a bad idea to reinstall to another drive then copy over what you want from the original.

Zogg - just saw your post , I have to think about it.
As a precaution , I did a ghost of my c:\ to e:\ therefore i think
I can rescue myself if somthing goes wrong, I just have to check
your suggestion , it sounds complicated to me.
Motorheader - on the asd - I got "no failure in this machine"
on command - I changed driver to f:\ (as this is what I have
in devices manager , and I got the content of the disk I
put in the CD-ROM. It looks ok to me, and I dont know what
do you make of it, I think it is consistent with the
previous diagnostics.

Where do I go from here?

Zogg - Tried your suggestion , but it did not do anything , the only
difference was that the driver I tried to remove , was without
the description on device manager ( no name for the device).
I kept looking in REGEDIT and on Hkey_local_machine\software\system\
currentcontrolset\services\class\hdc I have found 14 different keys
starting from 0000 until 0013 in infsection on the right hand side
there were 3 different entries (depending on each key number)
"dual_good_ide" or "good_ide" or "bad_ide"
I removed all keys but 3 and compared what I got with my second system.
Now it is ok as far as those keys but upon boot up I still can't see my
CD-ROM.

does anyone has any idea ?

This happened to my DVD with Win ME. One day it just disappered. Bios still detected it but not windows. This might seem simplistic compared to the other suggestions but try system restore. It worked for me. This might be some ME bug.

Jasonexus- Did what you suggested. Before rebooting I removed CD-rom and IDE drivers and did an ONTOP instalation of WindowsMe.
Didn't change anything.
I went to where Zogg suggested ( child000 and Child0001) and mad sure that
the entries there regarding hdc will match what I have in my system.
There were 2 miss matches , in MF\child001 it was "hdc\0011" for the
secondary IDE instead of 0002, so I corrected it , but - It didn't help
I till can't see my CD-rom in My computer.

Well, right now I have my own problems, BUT -- this happened to both my sister and my computers and we used an external CD-rw through the USB port and re-installed Windows and it took care of it.

In that case, we both lost our FAT32 at the same time. Her computer is up and running fine. With mine, I had to shlep between two computers adding dll files until it was happy and then it reloaded Windows and the CD-Roms came back. I have since tried to make a hard-drive change and am dead in the water again.

Somebody mentioned a trojan horse that was memory resident; did you check that out? I don't know how. So I am watching this thread closely.

Thanks to everyone that tried to help me.

I am preparing to erase my WindowsMe and install it fresh.

Man that sucks! This was not for lack of trying. This is one of the stragest ones I have ever seen or heard of. There are certain "glitches" that come up some time, but this is one of those that getting your hands on would be the best thing. Feel for ya!

If the CDROM appears in the device manager (as "Toshiba whatever&quot😉, then the problem is not with the IDE driver, but with something else. I seem to recall some TweakUI setting that would let you hide drive letters... could that be it?

YES-PowerJoe YES-PowerJoe YESPowerJoe YES-PowerJoe YES-PowerJoe

In "My Computer" of TweakUi drive F was not checked. After checking it
and rebooting - B I N G O I have my CD-ROM back.

Thanks PowerJoe. Thanks to everybody that tried to help me.

Oh my God!! What in the world are you using Tweakui with ME for!! They never even got the one out for IE 5.0x/Win98SE. I don't recall that being an option in your issue. My head hurts now from the BANGING for something that simple. I started having problems with my system a year ago and it turned out that TweakUI was causing corruption and other anomolies(sic).

Glad you got it, but I would get rid of TweakUI now.

As a support person I would charge someone $65 an hour for that ($85 for NT/2K) because it was by their own hand - something non-standard loaded.

Motorheader- Sorry I didn't mention it. I installed TweakUi about a year ago in order to speed bootup. At the time I used win98. When I upgraded
to another hard-disk the problem started. My previous hard disk had two
partions and therefor use E for CD-ROM. My current hard drive has three
partitions and CD-ROM should use F - that was unchecked since it did not
existed when I first installed the program.
Please don't feel bad about it. Most of us are interested in the hunt as much as we are interested in the prey and sometimes the hunt involves ghost chase.
As far as I am concerned , I will have a lot of free time .... for some time.

Thanks much .
