I have the original CD (OEM), and the system is up and running. Any chance of recovering the installation code? Is it somewhere in the registry? Is it possible to contact Microsoft? (I don't think I ever registered). I got it preinstalled from Midwest Micro, can they help?

Thx for any suggestion,

Nope its not in the reg. Nope MS does not care about you lost serial for a OEM license. Call the PC maker but I doubt they will give you another License without charge. Should take better care of such things.

I don?t have a solution for you, but I do have a suggestion for the future... whenever I get a CD that requires a ?key? or ?password? to activate, I take a Sharpie marker and write that information right on the face of the CD. That way all I need for a re-install is the CD; I don?t have to go hunting around for booklets, etc. looking for all the passwords!

The easiest method to determine the key number is to run winmsd.

From the Start menu, select Run, then Winmsd.

Look at the Version tab, and on the line above the register information, you?ll see a number in the form of 50036-xxx-yyyyyyy-71345.

The xxx-yyyyyyy is the number on the back of the CD-ROM case and is also the same number as the registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProductId
