I just had to do a system restore point on my wife's computer due to a bad printer driver. Now she can access the internet just fine, but can't access any shared files or printers on the other machines. When I try to browse the network places, it gives a "MyWorkGroupName is not accessible" error. I've checked that it has the correct workgroup name. I can ping back and forth just fine. I just can't access shared files and folders in either direction. What dumb thing am I missing here?

Update:

The restore point didn't fix my driver problem, so I undid it and came back to my original settings. It still can't access the other computers.

Don't use Network Places to get to shares. Ever. It's crap, especially when not using Active Directory and DNS to resolve names.

Just use the UNC path

\\servername\sharename

or if your machine is just having trouble resolving computer names use the IP

\\192.1689.0.1\sharename or just do the IP to bring up whatever is shared on the remote computer. Then just map it and be done with it.

I tried using the UNC path - can't connect. Ditto for using the IP like you listed. I can ping, but nothing else that I've tried will connect.

Although, now that I think about it, I didn't try going directly to the share. I tried \\servername, but not \\servername\sharename. I'll try that tonight.

Try doing the sharing with NetBEUI, none of this maybe on, maybe off nonsense. It ALWAYS shows up in My Network Places, ALWAYS.
