A day or two ago I asked about dirty computers and failed power supplies. Since then I have replaced the motherboard and power supply in question.
The new motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-6BXE with a PII 400 (all upstairs in a storage closet victims of my passion to upgrade). When the system was first turned on again, I got a fail to post tone (long tones spaced a few seconds apart). Digging around, swapping memory and such did no good. Was attempting to insure the video card was fully seated and my finger touched one of the memory chips and almost got a burn. There was no video during post but I expected it was caused by something else not the video card. Turns out, swapping in another video card solved the problem. The memory chip failed on the other card apparently as it was hot enough to burn your finger seriously. It looks as if the failed video card memory chip killed the power supply (that much heat comes from high current flow)!
OK, everything should be ok now right? Not! The system (boot) says I have no HDD and CDROM installed. What's up with that? I've done all the usual - tried to detect them in setup (that fails, reboot comes back and says they aren't there). Checked the cables power and signal, it's like the ide cables have broken somewhere in their length. The motherboard says there is no HDD and CDROM in the system.
