Lost Hard Drive Space

My computer got a virus about a month ago and I was forced to format the computer. However, during the act of formatting I think I did something I wasn't suppose to do and I lost 40 Gigs worth of hard drive space. I have a 160Gig hard drive but now I only have 120Gigs. I remember pressing partition sometime during the whole process. Does anyone have any idea what I did? Also, do you know any way I can get my whole 160 gigs back together?

Do all the updates on your os so it will support 48 bit addressing and see drives as larger than 137gb.

What windows are you running? You might be running into the 137 GB limit.

well, I had the 160 gigs before, so I don't think it's the limit thing; I'm running on windows xp.

And I've updated my windows xp on windows update, does that count?

If it's the 40 gigs unpartitioned space problem, can I get it back by formatting or something simpler?

I think you need at least SP1 to have Windows recognize past the 137GB limit.

And as for getting the unpartioned space back if it is not an SP thing, you will most likely have to use a program such as Partition Magic if the drive is your boot drive.

why dont you look into xp drive manager and see just what you DO have.

partition magic saved my a$$ a few weeks ago. For some reason on a new install of a hdd my 2nd hdd received a full partition of 200gb. Loaded up a copy of partition magic and deleted the partition and got back 150gb of files.

path is Control pannel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management

This is under clasic view in the control panel.

At disk management, you should be able to see your drive, and see if there is any unpartitioned space. If there is, you can partition it right in the disk management tool

Try this:
- Right-click on 'My computer'.
- Left click on 'Manage'.
- You should now have a full menu of Windows built-in utitities - including 'Disk Management'.

I found the disk management and I found out that I have 25.39 gigs unallocated and 127.99 gig in NTFS formated form. How do I get that 25.39 back?
