Lost hard drive space

I've got a question I first posed about six months ago. I have a 80 gig HD that was running out of room so I moved about 10 gig to another drive. The original drive does not show the 10 gig as being free. It shows exactly as it did before anything was moved. The other drive has the moved data so I know it transfered and yes I did move it, not copy.
The first time this happened about a week later the freed space finally appeared but I don't know how or why.
Well it's happened again. Any ideas as to what is going on?

try running defrag, see if it still shows.

BTW, what type of drive?

perhaps you forgot to empty the recycle bin?

Norton Utilities running on the drive? If so empty the Norton Protected files.

Good suggestion... Turn that off, it's not even necessary.

Yes i've done all that. I told you this was a real stumper.

is system restore enabled on the drive? i know that takes up a lot of space...try disabling it and also try emptying out all your temp folders.
