crazy.. i've never seen that before.. it kinda looks like a superman flying down, depositing a bomb then flying away... oops, spoiler!

The thing near the explosion is not one of those black clouds, it looks like a piece of metal from the plane. Right after the explosion you can see more of the same thing flying around. PowerDVD sucks at frame-by-frame but it's easy to see the things flying around.

It's the same puffs of black smoke thingies they saw in the jungle in the episode Locke was pulled down the hole in, and Jack saved him.

It's consistent with the story so far.

Nope, it's one of the black smoke thingies they saw in the jungle.

Isn't the turbine exploding because the guy gets sucked into it? Right before the explosion, a guy is sucked into the turbine.

I've looked at the DVD over and over and it doesn't look anything like a puff of smoke, it has straight lines and solid edges, nothing like the smoke that's seen in the forest.

Agreed, looks like a sheet of brown paper.

The other engine had the guy sucked into it.

bump because I can't get a hold of the dvd to check it myself.
Have any others checked it and whats your opinion?

I don't know much about CGI but it almost looks like a 'placeholder' or something the original programmers had in there to show the direction of the explosion or something along those lines. Just a guess.

It definitely has straight edges but is not completely opaque. Almost looks like a flying carpet shape. Not sure why they would even put it in there. It certainly was something that wasn't widely noticed so why go through any of the trouble?

I don't believe it to be the black smoke that is seen later in the series. during that beach scene, there is all kinds of debris flying around the air; paper, clothing, fabric, wreckage. It's just some debris that is being blown around by the engine's intake and exhaust.

Lost is a mystery. If all the little details and clues were widely and easily noticed, it wouldn't be much of a mystery.

OK I just rented the dvd and I was wrong about it being the other engine. There was only one engine that is shown on the ground, the one that exploded. The engine did explode just as the person was sucked into it. But in watching it in slo-mo back and forth it is clear that it is not a piece of debris just flying around. It struck the engine at the exact same time as the guy was sucked in and the engine exploded. It may be that something from the plane that broke off in the sky took that long to finally make it too the ground. And clearly it hit the engine and took off in what appeared to be controlled flight.
So it is either there intentionally as some clue or indeed an artifact that may have been used in the special effects.
Wow. I can't wait to watch these first episodes on dvd and look for clues!
