I installed a new Maxtor 40gb drive/promise ultra66 controller.
Created/formatted a win2k dynamic disk with a single simple volume. Copied 20Gb
of data onto it. Few days later, I rebooted and the drive was gone. Disk
managment reports the whole drive as unallocated now and wants to write a
new disk signature.
Is there any way to recover the data? I have let it write a new signature,
but it also wants to upgrade it to dynamic. Should I let it upgrade to
dynamic or will that reduce my chances of recovering the data.
A similar thing happened a few weeks before. Installed a 20gb
drive/ultra66 controller. The controller wasn't being seen. Installed the
20gb drive on my motherboard ide. Formated it as a dynamic disk with a
single simple volume. Worked fine for a couple of weeks. Then I decided to
mess with the ultra66 again. Moved the controller to a different slot at
which point it worked in win2k. Attached the 20gb drive. Disk management
reported it as unallocated and wanted to write a new signature.
Looking in the event log, I have noticed a couple of system events reporting
write errors:
dmio: Harddisk1 write error at block 80039200: status 0xc00000b5
There are four of these errors.
Opening up the case, I noticed a lot of heat coming from the hard drives.
The drives were stacked next to a scsi drive that gets pretty hot. My case
is good case in terms of cooling. Is heat likely to have been the problem?
Any help is appreciated,
