IMO, it's not worth downloading, especially if you have a slow connection.

The graphics weren't that impressive. I've seen better textures, other than that the character kinda looked nice with it's amazing amount of polys, sometimes realistic, sometimes cartoony and then there is HDR which is in DOD:S already. And some tree branches looked like they came out of MS Paint.

It's HL2 graphics with HDR and a few more polys, although the extra polys aren't impressive.

What exactly were you expecting...? It's just HL2 level graphics with HDR tacked on, basically. Yes, the textures aren't that great, but I haven't seen a game recently where I thought the textures looked really good anyway.

From someone who loved Doom3, why am i not surprised?

you seem to be hung up on 'textures' . . . surely there will be a hi-res pack available or you can model your own :p

Not impressive? name ANOTHER current game's overall graphics that is MORE impressive [to you - and i am looking forward to picking it apart]:Q

:D

i think of LC as a free mini-[playable] tech demo.

nice!

i AM on dial-up . . . it took ALL night to d/l it and it IS worth it

even on a 9800xt the gfx are beautiful

Of course HL2 doesn't have as pretty textures as Doom 3... but at least it has one thing over Doom 3: EVERYTHING DOESN'T LOOK LIKE CLAY.

Wait, Doom 3 had pretty textures?

I just finished it, I liked it. Not sure how I feel about the HDR implementation. It looks great in some areas.

It runs less than acceptable on my 7800GT with all options on.

That would be very difficult. I meant that it's not impressive in that it's not that much more impressive compared to HL2's graphics.

Wow.

Don't make this into a Doom3 vs HL2 battle. And I don't think Doom3 looks like clay, but the characters look a little plasticy.

Wait, Doom 3 had pretty textures?
Doom3 had pretty good textures for it's time, but HL2's were sharper. I think Doom3's textures looked much better for use with the background than the characters. Go back now and look at the textures for the characters and it's pretty bad. Even though HL2's textures were sharper however, they seemed to be very compressed in that Doom3's textures looked truer to it's intentful color.

It's a tech demo, not an expansion pack. What were you expecting?
Better graphics, especially textures. The way they talked about it, saying they were gonna put better textures and all that crap, they were a bit better, possibly more on the fisherman than anything, but they didn't look much different than before. You know, I though HDR was impressive back when they announced it, now it's nothing. Although I did like the way it looked shining on the wet pebbles near the water - the most impressive feature. What I didn't like was how the bigger rocks near the water shined, typical crappiness of other games. doesn't look realistic. IIRC, it was better in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

I was disgusted with the character textures before the game even came out, despite everyone foaming at the mouth about it. SoF2 was years older and still had better textures.

What a weird thread. HL2 has way better textures than Doom3. I'd even acknowledge that. The difference though is that the sheer number of model surfaces in any given Doom3 level would make the HL2 engine die a horrific death. Levels in the Doom3 engine are insanely complex, everything from pipes to doors. I've noticed even FEAR doesn't even ATTEMPT to compete in that aspect, it sticks to a lot of very minimalistic areas like office cubicles. You know, reading your guys posts some times makes me wonder if you even play these games with your eyes open.

since it runs pretty good on my 9600 pro and "less than acceptable" on your 7800000000 GT, i think we might as well swap video cards.

PM me for address info - thanks

I didn't think it was anything special... it really doesn't look like it should have taken them as long as it did to make it!

i just played LC and i gotta say, it did looked absolutely beautiful in some areas. other areas the lighting seemed overdone. mind you, im running it on a 9800 NP, i dont see how the 78billion GT can complain (sempron64 2800+, 1 gig ram, 9800 NP here running 10x7 all the way up)

I played it on my rig just fine with HDR. It was pretty nifty. This isn't meant to be some amazing mod or an expansion pack by any means. It's basically just a tech demo. It is showing off HDR, that's it. I think it would be great if they just released a mini level like this whenever something new comes out...get some player feedback.

It looked better than FEAR and ran smoother too. I have not finished it yet, but so far its fun. It's really just a small tech demo level, not a full game.

Same old song and dance. I agree with you hear. Glitchy as hell too. I think that they spent most of the time trying to figure out how to work the tape recorder for the commentary.

it's more than that . . . it's a tech demo using SM 2.0b to achieve HDR . . . not SM3 . . . as to "why" it took so long - listen to the commentary . . .

. . . . then you will also know 'why?'

:D

I don't get why HDR causes so much of a performance loss. From how they explain it, all it does is let a light source have a brightness level higher than 100%, so it can still be very bright off a moderately reflective surface. That shouldn't take much graphics power.

Well I was surprised by how short the demo was - it really was just a demo, which is fine but when they said a "level" I was expecting something along the lines of a HL2 level.

The only glitch I encountered was when dead bodies would sometimes resurrect and just stand there without moving. You couldn't shoot them, you could walk right through them. This happened to me after dying and loading from an autosave. More amusing than annoying.

I was unable to beat the copter on hard, had to drop it to medium.

For a demo of what is to come, I really enjoyed it and the commentary gave a nice background of what they did. The fact that they released it just to play around with was nice. Yes, some textures weren't that great, but the ones on the wall in the church I thought looked pretty good. So with more polish, implementing HDR will be a great nice step.
