I get an error message that the drive for the CD is inaccessible, please insert disc and retry.

How can I fix this?

The computer is an athlon amd k6 w/Windows 98 SE and it's used by a kid who is all too happy to power off in the middle of some eduational first grade reader program on CD.

Take any CD out of the drive, remove your CD ROM drive from DevMgr, shutdown and let the drive be redetected. See if that helps.

Didn't know AMD made an Athlon K6.... ;)

Does any other CD work in the CD-ROM?

It turned out to be a dead CD Rom drive, an alternate worked fine. Thanks for the help and the ribbing! It's not my box, I'm just trying to fix it. I'm Intel all the way.
