Lost bookmarks after FireFox upgrade

My brother sent me the email below. Any ideas?

...what happened was I installed the latest Firefox browser (2.0.0.1) on Saturday, and lost all my bookmarks. The support site suggested 3 things to do (uninstall/reinstall; look for the bookmarks.htm file; look for the bookmarksbackup file), but none of them worked. Also, I now cannot save any bookmarks. I was wondering if you knew of any other ways to recover them.

You only asked about Firefox but this is good info for all to have:

Locations of Bookmarks and Outlook Data Files

C:\Docs & Settings\User\App Data\Opera\Opera\profile\opera6.adr

C:\Docs & Settings\User\App Data\Mozilla\Profile\Default\hi1j19a.slt\bookmarks.html

C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Defaults\Profile\bookmarks.htm

C:\Docs & Settings\User\Favorites (for Internet Explorer)

C:\Docs & Settings\User\Local Settings\App Data\Microsoft\Outlook .. copy all files here

For you on Firefox the directory "hi1j19a" may not be the same but it will be somewhere
in that Default folder path

Also, what I do is like once a month or two, I copy ALL of the above files to another
location where I have my Ghost Image ... this way you should never lose them and if
you need to restore an image, it is easy to get them all back. I would hate to lose my
bookmarks or outloook address book

My brother was able to retrive the bookmarks by going to the profile in %appdata%.
