Lost: .40-caliber H&K UMP submachine gun + ammo

Analog

A Monroe County Sheriff's deputy is under investigation after his .40-caliber H&K UMP submachine gun was stolen from an unlocked vehicle at his home.

The theft happened sometime between midnight and 6:30 a.m. Thursday, said Monroe County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Rick Galimberti.

The deputy, an eight-year veteran of the department, took the weapon home after late night training on Wednesday to clean it. He is assigned to the department's special response team and is expected to maintain the gun, Galimberti said.

The deputy locked his vehicle when he got home, but went back to it to get something and apparently forgot to relock the doors, Galimberti said. In addition to the gun, 20 rounds of ammunition and an unloaded clip was stolen.

"It's not a proud moment," Galimberti said.

Galimberti said it is not unusual for members of the special response team to take their weapons home for cleaning.

On June 15, a 9mm Colt submachine gun was stolen from an undercover West Bloomfield Police car parked on Woodward while an officer attended a Detroit Tigers game. The officer is assigned to the department's special response team.

West Bloomfield Police officials are investigating that incident. Officials were not available this morning to comment on the investigation.

First off I work at the busiest trauma hospital in Detroit and one more gun on the streets of detroit will not magically make us busier 😛

Secondly those officers should be shot for being that stupid.

I mean who the in the hell leaves a gun on freaking WOODWARD in downtown detroit with a gun in it....oh wait someone from West Bloomfield where the closet thing they have to a crime is some 15 year firing paintballs at cars

I couldn't shoot my brothers sidearm or M4 assault rifle with his police issued ammo, had to buy my own, which I planned on doing anyway. They're actually accountable for that and keep inventory of it very strictly.

Didn't something like this happen before? I remember a post about a cop leaving his gun in the bathroom, then came back for it and it was gone.

That's an easy couple thousand dollars for someone to steal out of the back of an unlocked car. Retail is only about $1000, but an automatic version sold illegally could go for at least $5000.

The UMP is a sweet gun, much lighter and more pointable than the MP5.

That's quite the gun for an undercover cop to have in his car.

read it again. because i do not see where it says he is undercover

Where does it say he was undercover? It says he's part of his dept. SRT.

Whoa. I had a complete lapse, there. I barely skimmed this part and thought they were talking of the incident.

But that was a different incident.

o well.. MP5 is better, more accurate, and cheaper

The UMP was manufactured as the successor to the MP5. It's lighter, just as accurate, more ergonomic, and cheaper due to it's use of polymer throughout the weapon. Do you really think H&K would set out to make a worse gun?

EDIT: Oh yeah, and your counter-strike experience doesn't go very far in this thread.
