the whole "they're dead and in purgatory and/or hell" thing is something that fans speculated about from the beginning... my guess is that they're bringing it up in the show as a red herring or simply to disprove it and let fans no that there's no well in hell they're dead and that the show will have a real ending :p

I remember reading an article awhile ago that said the producers of Lost were going to announce this summer how many seasons they're planning on running the show for, to give viewers a light at the end of the tunnel for when the final answers will be revealed :)

That's probably it. The super fans know the producers said that it's not purgetory. 99% of the fans don't know this though, so they need to have it disproven. Good call!

why do i have the feeling he's still not dead?

same reason patchy didn't die?

Yeah I don't think Locke's dad is dead, or else the "island" will bring him back to life. I wonder how Juliette is going to explain her tape. And what possible lie she told Jack, which Jack told her not to tell Kate when they were talking about the new girl and GPS-radio-iPhone thingy.

Maybe it wasnt a lie.

I think they both know something about not being able to get off the island, which corresponds to how eye patch guy came back, which corresponds to everything else.

Did Rousou say she was their for dynamite AND to see Jhon?

I think Sayid will now again mount an expidition to try and find the blocking radio signal.

What is this purgatory theory?

Whats the deal with Jhons dad's story of getting there? Was he kidnapped, or did he actually die? Im betting on the death.

And seeing as how Jhons dad somehow knows whats going on, theres somewhere evident in the story where we could figure out whats going on.

My 2 cents.

exerpts:
Lets take a look at some of the facts about this island:

* It has been continuously repeated by all characters that the island represents a 'second chance.'
* The island has some giant mystical creature that kills at will. However, this creature confronted Locke and let him live.
* Ever since Locke lost the ability to walk [for reasons we don't know], he has always dreamed of outback adventure. Upon arrival to this island, Locke is given another chance with renewed mobility.
* Boone was tested by the island through a hallucination about his stepsister
* The island plays host to a renegade 'tribe' that has no problem hurting the LOST survivors.
* A lot of the characters past experiences have been re-structured somewhere on the island.
* All of the characters can be good people, but most are stubborn and all have some skeletons in their closet.
* The island showed the ghost of Jack's father. This ghost led the survivors to fresh water and shelter.
* The show is titled LOST [a fact I will explain later].
* The show has mentioned faith, luck, and Catholicism more than a few times.
* These people survived a plane crash. Sayid knows that there survival should have been impossible.

ALSO:
loki's explanation 4 posts up is a good explanation about why dead Ben thought it was purgetory. Just the producers respondign to fan comments. It's a red herring.

Ok ok wait a minute....by some weird thought that I'm having here at 2am....she said the plane was found off the coast of Bali...and their flight was Sydney to LA....Bali is the totally OPPOSITE side of Australia...ok ok there HAD to be some coverup and there is definitely more to this Oceanic Flight 815 stuff that we haven't seen/heard from this Naomi woman.

Sounds to me like a coverup. They did say they found bodies in the wreckage, so this is where the story doesn't add up though.

Obviously other people made it to the island apart from those on the plane. Like when Juliette drinks the orange juice. Seems like some people made it to the island in a "death-like" experience while others simply traveled there in some way.

Also Penny (Desmond's woman) "supposedly" pays the parachute chick to go to certain coordinates. If the wreckage and deceased had been found, then obviously Penny didn't believe it for some reason.

Desmond was not on the flight so the crash had nothing to do with her search. He's on the island for a whole different reason.

Indeed, this didn't fully cross my mind! Interesting...

This week there were no actual flashbacks off the island, it was all on the island.

I wish somebody would just cap Ben already. But knowing the island, he'd just come back to life :(

Locke's dad made the point that he'd sexed Sawyer's mom.

That subtly plants a hint that he fathered both Locke & Sawyer; they're half-brothers.

we do know why Locke was paralyzed - his dad pushed him out of an 8 story building (something like 8 stories) and he landed flat on his back paralyzing him from the waste down.

Also, they said they had to view the wreckage with remote controlled devices with cameras, so I doubt they brought any of the bodies up from the wreckage, they said it was like 4 miles deep or something.

Umm ... i doubt it.

Sawyer had already been born when all that crap happened and can remember it, so he was obviously older ... so your theory makes no sense :p

can you be sure of that? why did he go through so much trouble of having Jack captured to treat him if he knew he was just going to be revived?

i believe that since he was born on this island, the islands mystical healing whatever properties don't apply to him.

that is also why i think babies can't be born on this island. you can't bring NEW life onto this island, they have to have been chosen by the island.

Yeah, he wrote it and had it with him the whole time. Early in this season or last, I think Kate took it and Sawyer got upset about it.

I LOL'd as well when he did the blah blah blah bit :)

the producers/creators have confirmed before that it's not purgatory or an alternate universe/dimension. you can believe them or not.
