What's up everyone...

My friend sold his laptop on ebay for about 1k. He received a paypal
payment and sent the laptop to Kansas (we're in california)...anyway...
the payment from paypal was revoked when the laptop was already
shipped to kansas.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get his money back?
Are there any laws regarding this? anyone have any experience with something
similiar?

THanks!!

Was it sent to a confirmed address?
This problem is precisely the scenario that has affected thousands of people. When I last did a paper on PayPal, there was essentially nothing you could do. Paypal can't be sued since the Terms-of-Service that you agree to mandates arbitration. And apart from some flimsy protection scheme, there was no help on their part whatsoever. That may have since changed, since I studied PayPal over a year ago.

Good luck.

Why were the charges reversed? If he was paid with fraudulent funds (ie: stolen account/credit card), his laptop is long gone. If it's still under warranty and he has the serial number, have him call the manufacturer and report it stolen.

Did he ship to a confirmed address and use a trackable (NOT usps delivery confirmation) carrier? He should contact paypal, but if he was paid with fradulent funds, he's out of luck I'm afraid. Try contacting the local PD where he shipped the laptop.

I always wait until the funds are transfered to my checking account before shipping. I feel safer that way :)

Could you call a local Kansas police station and tell them that so and so person from so and so address stole a laptop from you? And since it crossed state line, isn't their a website that you can report this to the FBI?

IF I lost 1k, I would fly down to Kansas myself ... but that's just me because I have a short temper when it comes to theft. and it's definitely a bad idea.

Not if I don't verify my account with them. By verifying the account (you know the two small deposits they make, and you type it into the site), you agree to let them arbitrarily withdraw money on your behalf for purchases. I guess if they HAD to they might be able to charge you, but I'm not too sure. And, what if you withdraw the cash, then remove your account? I'm not sure, too many complications there.

PayPal can absolutely NOT withdraw from your checking accout without your permission.

If you would've gotten the money into your bank account before PayPal reversed, you simply would've been 1,000$ in the hole with PayPal.

paypal can't dip into your bank account if there is a reversal, they can charge a CC to recover the funds though

Are you saying that if you have $0 balance in your paypal account and someone charges back on you that they won't hit up your linked checking account?

Because I'm pretty sure they do....

It will put your PayPal account into a negative balance.

You guys have no clue about Paypal.

If you have a bank account linked with Paypal, Paypal can withdraw the amount charged back from your checking account if your Paypal balance is $0. If your checking account balance is $0 as well, say hello to overdraft fees from your bank.

Those of you that disagree with me, try it with each other's accounts and you'll see who is right.

I am not going to go through pages of user agreement just to show this off for you, read the damn thing yourself. I have had this happen to 2 of my friends.

And if you are so eager to learn, try it with one of your friends
