My old PC gets some occasionally use - - mostly to watch DVDs and TV.

@ P3 850mHz
384mb Ram
Windows 98se
Kworld cheap TV Card
Ti4200 AGP with DVI and VGA
some 17" CRT monitor with VGA connection

About 1/3 to 1/2 of the time, I have a problem during startup:
Windows will load, I enter password, desktop will load, THEN the screen will flash black and come back if "works." It is as if it is trying to change video modes or resolution - - but by appearances, the desktop looks the same before and after.

If it doesn't work, @ the time the screen flashes, the monitor image does not come back. The monitor has power, but no image. Reconnecting the monitor does not help. I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and then ALT+S to shutdown. Turn the PC back on, the monitor immediately comes to life, shows the splash / boot screens. So far, every 2nd try, the monitor comes back after the flash.

Once it is "on", the monitor works fine for hours. It will power down after @ 30 minutes of no activity. When I touch the keyboard or mouse, it comes right back every time.

I have tried removing extra startup items b/c it is not connected to the internet. I removed the NVidia control panel, but that didn't help.

Things I can try:
remove extra CD drive and NIC card
Try another Power Supply
Reinstall video drivers
Reinstall OS
Try DVI Adapter to connect to VGA plug on Monitor

What might be causing the problem?
