Loss of flow in Win XP

I am helping a friend with her computer.

It is an older hog, and she all kinds of crap running on it. She complained of generally slow speeds, and frequent flowstops.

I removed a lot of programs, and the speed is OK now, but the flowstops persist. The net runs fine for 10-20 mins, then all traffic stops.

The network she is using is run in common for the apartment block she lives in. It is via ethernet. Nobody else complains, so I doubt the error lies there.

She is using WinXP SP 2, and an older Built-in Intel netcard.

Any suggestions?

I guess you've never heard of spyware or nasty things that bing to Winsock.

I'd check for that before trying a new network card.

Thanks for the replies. I would rather avoid a new netcard if that is possible.
I checked for malware per the instructions in the consolidaded security thread. I did not find anything besides a few tracking cookies, and the problem persists.

Any other suggestions?
