Loss of DHCP

I am working on a friends system with Windows XP Home. Within the last week he has lost internet connectivity through his cable modem. When I took the machine home and started investigating I found that it was not able to obtain an IP/DNS addresses from the cable modem or a router. I attempted a repair to the connection but that failed for the same reason. I then hard coded in the TCP/IP data and the connection appears to be working. However that was through my router at home so if he hooks straight to a cable modem that won't work. I also discovered that he had a mess of spyware and there may be more that I am still trying to clean up. Is there a way to repair whatever has happened to cause DHCP to fail to function? Thanks any advance for any advice.
