Losing video output in games

hey guys... i got the weirdest thign happening to me. when i play rise of nations, sometimes my radeon 9700 will just up and stop. the screen goes black, but the music and sound fx still play, so i know the rest of the rig is running. any ideas on this? it's a stock fic a97, no o/c, nothing. i've not had this in other games, so i'm a bit confused as to what's going on. nothing in my event log shows up and microsoft is never a help. is this ati's way of stopping the card from killing itself (instead of say, checkerboarding instead?) any comments appreciated

could be overheating i guess. most likely its a driver issue since this is a new game
