on my home lan i recently replace my home file/print server w/ a new unit that runs xp. the problem is that i lose the shares from my rig to the server either to folders or printers. both machines are running the same m/b and both work fine as far as being able to ping each other and both can get online fine. both have been setup so there is no power management on the machines except for the monitor going off, but all network is set to never be powered down.

if i reboot my machine, i can get back into the server, which has the username/password that i use to log in as one of the servers users w/ the appropriate rights.

i lose connection on my rig to the server at different intervals, sometimes 20mins, sometimes 6hrs. all cables are good, switch is good and both machines run very well except for this one issue.

i had had this issue along time ago w/ xp and made my older server w/ 2000 or 2000ser which worked fine for years, but i don't want to mess around w/ 2003ser or even move back to any flavor of 2000 as the server is configured the way i want it, except obviously for the losing of network shares.

firewalls are not an issue and i have the appropriate rights on said shares, but when it goes down, i can't connect to the other machine on any of the shares, it is like my username/password on that machine is killed.

no error logs at all

please help as this is getting very annoying

simple file sharing was not checked. i did use this command - net config server /autodisconnect:-1 and so far it is working for 1 day. i think i will leave my machine on for the next 3-4days straight and see if i still have drive and printer shares.
