I've not got the money right now to keep up my Taekwondo school membership. This sucks. This Saturday I test for green, and that's my last class. I'll pass to get my green belt then not go back for a few months. That sucks!

ha! not guaranteed that I'll get the job, but it's looking good so far. I still have some things to work out first.

Besides... I don't have the money right now and that's when I need it.

Um, exactly how much is this membership? You're making it sound like it'll cost you an arm and a leg.

Large martial arts schools are known for actually charging an arm and a leg. And being a martial arts school, they have the ability to collect payment. :)

If you've been with the dojo for awhile I would think you could work something out with them, at least give it a try :)

Yeah and worst case explain it to the instructor I would imagine he would welcome you back when you can afford it.

well, with $185 the first month for WTF membership, U.S. West Coast Taekwondo membership, dobok, patches, etc.
Each month I shell out $70. Then, for my first three testings, I had to pay $40. With this testing coming up, I'll pay $10 more. Each two tests, the fee goes up $10.

Right now I'm working all of 9 hours per week @ $7/hr. I had to drop insurance on my truck and ride the bus to be able to pay for anything at all. (insurance was $770/6months)

yes, right now, that $70/mo. and $50/test IS an arm and a leg.

I was surprised when I checked on prices in the plano texas area. "Accredited" martial arts schools were over 100$ a month.

FFMCobalt: Don't worry about... does not being in a federation mean you are less of a martial artist? I think not. In 83 when I got started with TKD, there were no federations that I knew of. They are just a scam to get money. The ones I saw around Tampa sucked too. The school I was in had a 7-9 year black belt program. If you were a natural, you might get to blackbelt in 6 years, but that was rare. So many of these "federations" pump blackbelts out in about 2 years. I can't believe it.

Just focus on finding a good teacher, and one that offers more than 3 classes a week. IMO you really need to go about 5 days a week for 2-3 hours with a good teacher to get good.

right now, I've got four classes per week open to me, but I can only attend two with my current schedule. Each class is 50 minutes. At the rate I'm going, I'll get to black belt in 3 and a half years. Most people take four.

But that's just that. Even when I'm black belt I fully expect to get my rump beaten. I do every Friday night at FullContact FightNight.

I'm limping today because of last Friday, too. :) that's alot of fun!

I too have seen the association that asw you say pump out blackbelts .. its depressing ... I was raise in and around the south east Martial Arts circuit and saw many good training schools .. and way too many places in it for just the money not the sport itself. My brother's blackblet test was 2 hours and 10 minutes (minus three 4 minute breaks) and him alone. He had to do everything he had learned in the 7 years he had been studying there from the simplest to the most complicated. It was intense. I once saw a blackbelt test at one of these blackbelt pumping places and was amazed that they had 4 people testing for black belts at the same time and I dont think the test even lasted an hour.

my test will last four hours. I'll have to go to USWC headquarters in Portland OR.

The man who will be judging me is an 8th degree blackbelt Korean. Master Shin.

And, yes, I'll do everything that I've ever learned.

The cool things that I'm looking forward to are things like speed punches. I've got to hold a 12"x12"x1" board in front of me, straight out. I'll drop the board, set up for the punch (chambering out with one arm and retract with the other) and punch through the board before it drops below my waist level.

I seriously think you're getting ripped off.
$70 a month? !!!

I trained with a TKD master here, a korean with 8th degree b.b. He was an olympic referee, and I'm sure winning tournaments is not an issue to him. With that and everyday training except sunday, I'm paying $40 a month.

but I quit.

b/c I don't like TKD, and I found a good Karate teacher that only charges $10 for an exam and nothing more.

my advice: go find a better and cheaper dojo. They're out there.

I might like a cheaper school, and there are plenty of them around here. But they're all cheap in price AND in teaching. I go to one of the top schools in the state.

that's why I'm down about it. I'm proud to come out of that school, and very sad to have to leave now. But I know I'll be going back, so there's something good about leaving.
